#cbr11bingo #And So it Begins
This is a bit embarrassing to admit, but I was not even half way through the first chapter when something hit me as so FREAKING (only I really did not say freaking) funny I laughed so hard, I hurt myself. Yes. The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins caused me physical pain.
Darn you Clint, Griffin, Justin, and Travis McElroy. And darn you Carey Pietsch for encouraging this team by illustrating their podcast in this graphic novel series!
You might want a basic understanding of Dungeon & Dragons(D&D), but it is not needed. Just know that there are three characters who will go on adventures, meet many people along the way (one with a really bad accent), they will swear (a lot), fight (a lot), say bad puns (oh boy do they ever), have sexual innuendos (and not so innuendo), do spells (some work; some not so much) and break the fourth wall (again, a lot).
This is a fantasy adventure first; with modern ideas, thoughts, and language. It for a strong 13-year-old but more likely for 14 to adult. It is Fist Second creation which explains why it has a lovely setup to it, is executed nicely and I wanted to just fly through. But if I had, I would have missed learning that spiders are just “hairy turds with legs.” (Which frankly, I think is a bit harsh.)
Piestch’s illustrations are marvelous. There is no question to what the action is, who the characters are as they stay consistent in manners and dress. The coloring is fantastic, you see blood, fire, snark in faces, fear and laughter. The McElroy’s and Piestch paired their talents perfectly to make an enjoyable graphic novel.
