From the author and illustrator team of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Presents A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo, you get another clever story with a modern twist. E.G. Keller’s signature illustration style mixes with Jill Twiss’s story smoothly in this new picture book, The Someone New.
Jitterbug is a chipmunk that likes things to stay the same. If things are new, well she starts to get the jitters something awful. And one day she knows something Brand New is going to happen. And off she goes to find it. Along the way, she meets up with her friends. Each one is doing something neat and fun, but nothing they are doing is Brand New. They are doing things that they do all the time. But when something or someone Brand New does happen, Jitterbug does not handle it well. It takes some special old friends and one brave chipmunk to learn that Brand New can be as awfully nice as the familiar.
Twiss’s story is just sweet, fun and a learning experience that is presented a little differently than most books about fear and trying new things or meeting new people. Partly this is to due to the illustrations of Keller. These images are squishy, cuddly, realistic but light hearted. There is color popping out all over pages. The reds, blues, purples, greens and all other colors of the rainbow and beyond fill every spot of the page.
A bit on the longer side, this might not be for the very active child, but will be a fun sit down and read kind of book.
