I learned about Fuzzy Baseball when a Facebook friend of a friend of mine turned out to be the author of the series. John Steven Gurney also commented on the fact I was planning on picking it up by saying he was in talks with our events person to come to the store. Therefore, of course, I had to read this book about baseball.
Ah! Baseball! The game with the sticks and hats and balls! That pastime that we sing about. The one that has hard bleachers, overpriced hot dogs, loyal fans and (when you’re 12) really cute bat boys.
This great graphic novel goes one step farther and gives you a story about trying in a modern context. We have a young possum who knows she can be a great team member, she keeps practicing until she can join her favorite team, The Fernwood Valley Fuzzies. And finally, they are up to bat to play against their rivals, The Rocky Ridge Red Claws. The only team The Fuzzies have not beaten once. Can they do it? With baseball puns (Jackie Rabbitson, Sandy Kofox, and Hammy Sosa) and animal puns (Gator Gibson, Stetch Giraffolo, and Fernado del Toro), allusions to another famous baseball game (one with a guy named Casey) and other fun goodies, this is a must have for your baseball lover, player or story enjoyer.
Fun illustrations that are a homerun. Fast pace and bold, deep colors, we the readers will be root, root rooting for not only the home team but for book two, Fuzzy Baseball Ninja Baseball Blast.
