Learning to read takes on a new twist with Read the Book, Lemmings by Ame Dyckman and Zachariah Ohora. When the lemmings are told to, “Read the book!” to learn how to be lemmings, it does not go as S.S. Cliff, First Mate Foxy planned. In fact, it goes very, very wrong! But when he learns his lemmings are not being stubborn but that they just do not know how to read, Foxy must teach Jumper, Me Too, and Ditto Lemming to read. Which also does not go as planned.
Like her book You Don’t Want a Unicorn, (illustrated by Liz Climo) things are not always what they seem. But they are always lighthearted and have a peculiar dash of modern humor. Dyckman has a quirky personality herself and that comes out in her books. (Just follow her on Twitter and you will see how fun she is.) Her books take on that grand persona, too.
Illustrations in each of her books varies depending on who gets the pleasure of being the illustrator. I am afraid, Ohora’s illustrations are not my personal favorite, but they are a delightful addition to this story. The simple quality to them allows for the text to not be over powered, but to be complimented. Yet, they also add their own take on the words on the page and they do have their own amount of unique and fun details. He has collaborated with Dyckman in her other books Wolfie The Bunny and Horrible Bear.
