Opus the Penguin Stories

A Wish for Wings that Work: An Opus Christmas Story by Berkeley Breathed

The Last Basselope: One Ferocious Story by Berkeley Breathed

Goodnight Opus by Berkeley Breathed

October 12, 2026 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

I don’t know about you, but I keep a shelf of my childhood favorite books amongst the rest of my books. Re-Readathon had a prompt for re-reading a childhood favorite, so I knew I had some on hand, but I forgot that I didn’t have a copy of Strega Nona until I went looking for it. So, once staring at the shelf I grabbed my copy of A Wish for Wings that Work: An Opus Christmas Story by Berkeley Breathed and also The Last Basselope […]

Let’s Show The Buggers That We Will Rule This Place Again From Their Waste

Praiseworthy by Alexis Wright

October 10, 2026 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

Have you ever gotten the feeling that here, in the time we find ourselves in, that perhaps everything is just a bit to much? Life is an omnishambles and you can’t bare to open the news because you can’t stand to see the news; is anyone going to care about the threats of climate change or emerging pandemics; does anyone really care about the future we are leaving our children? Forget the future, does the government care about children right here, right now? Or is […]

Bodies? Bodies!

Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepnes

August 29, 2022 by Jake 2 Comments

Read this as part of CBR14 Bingo: Bodies. Because it has “bodies” in the title and involves a lot of bodies, some alive, some dead.  You was by far one of the best books I read this year. Which surprised me given that I don’t care for books about serial killers; finding them monotonous and often gratuitously violent. Everyone is trying to rip off Hannibal Lecter these days (and has been for the last thirty years). But Caroline Kepnes has crafted a you-niquely (see what I did there? […]

Bodied

You by Caroline Kepnes

July 28, 2022 by Jake Leave a Comment

Kind of like my review for 2666, this is going to be one where I have to sort of list my uncategorized scattered thoughts. I sat on this for 24 hours and I still don’t know the best way to talk about this book so here it goes… -It took me four tries to read this. Why couldn’t I quit? My wife hate-watches the series. I walked in on her during a viewing and caught maybe fifteen minutes of it. It really helped me to understand […]

You don’t wear a wedding ring and I go on.

You by Caroline Kepnes

June 17, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I think this book is really successful (not supremely — despite what the cover tells you, it’s not Gone Girl but more so than I would have suspected). But what this really means is that the audiobook is really successful. The narration of Santino Fontana really works here because instead of the deadpan of the show (mimicking Dexter) we get more life. Joe, we realize, is not a sociopath unable to feel anything or even a psychopath unable to empathize whatsoever with his victims. Instead, he is […]

“It is my destiny to know people who abuse punctuation.” Same, Joe. Same.

Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepnes

A few weeks ago, I reviewed the utterly bizarre You, by Caroline Kepnes. I wasn’t quite sure about the story, but I adored the narration of the audiobook (BEST GREG 4EVA), and immediately wanted MORE. So, here I am, doubly confused after having listened to Hidden Bodies, the sequel to You. Joe is terrible, and I kind of love him a little bit. For the first part of the book, Joe and his new girlfriend, Amy (who he started dating in You, after murdering Beck […]
