“It is completely unimportant. That is why it is so interesting.”

The Murder of Roger Akroyd by Agatha Christie

June 24, 2025 by cheerbrarian 7 Comments

Buckle up, buttercups. Ya girl has got 15 reviews a’coming. I am mildly annoyed I got this bogged down, but I’m remembering the words of my husband from a few years back when I would get anxious and frustrated about this scenario. “Ah. So you’re behind on your pretend homework?” Touche, sir. It’s important to me, and that’s fine, but I used to not read until I had written a review. Unnecessarily punative much?? Glad that I have been able to relax about it and […]

Murder Most Fun

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

January 4, 2020 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Toward the end of CBR11, someone (Classic, I believe) posted a review of Agatha Christie’s The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. It had been a while since I had read a good mystery, an even longer while since I had read any Christie, and having just finished The Most Depressing Book Ever, I decided to do myself a treat and see what happened to Roger. I’m not sure why murder mysteries are so gratifying — perhaps the logic of it all, the finding of answers, the […]

Still the Best Reveal…

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

December 26, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Updated: December 2019.  This book still is for me the best murder mystery I have read. Christie totally deserves all of the accolades she got for this book. I loved every minute of it and the set-up. I still gasped when we have our Poirot deducing who killed Roger Ackroyd.  I started reading Agatha Christie about a year or so ago. I had only read three of her Miss Marple novels and this was my first Hercule Poirot novel. I was once again pleasantly surprised […]

You should employ your little grey cells

I generally like Agatha Christie novels. And I generally liked this one. In fact, it’s one of the ones I have liked the most. That said, I never like them that much. So that said…. Agatha Christie novels remind me of a long running tv show that have had multiple different showrunners. Sort of like the Simpsons, where the Conan O’Brien days were great, the Dana Gould days were ok, etc etc. Also, like tv shows, sometimes there’s a more innovative and interesting attempt to tell the […]

Is this the best Agatha Christie book? I’m still partial to ‘And Then There Were None.’

Up until the ending, I really did not understand why this book is widely considered to be the best (or at least the top five) of Christie’s books. Then it happened, and I was like WHAT!? Actually it was more like a double what, because not only was it a really daring ending, especially for being published in 1926, but I actually guessed the murderer! That has never happened to me before. I am THE WORST at guessing mystery endings. I am gullible and trusting […]
