Oceans rise, empires faaaaaaall!

January 23, 2018 by thewheelbarrow 4 Comments

This review will be one of the more spoiler-y reviews out there.  It’s about book seven in a series so it’s hard not to talk about things that have happened.  That said, here we go: One of my favorite aspects of the Expanse series is the wonderful titles of each novel and trying to figure out how it relates to the book.  You see, each book is title something very grandiose and magnificent from somewhere in myth, legend, literature, or religion. Book one is Leviathan […]

“I actually read history. It’s like reading prophecy, you know.”

January 21, 2018 by narfna 4 Comments

A fun thing to do with this series is to predict the way the story will go based on the piece of mythology, history or religion featured in each title. Another fun thing to do is realize how wrong you were in your predictions, after the book has had its way with you. It’s still fun afterwards, though. I bet the authors have a grand ole time coming up with these titles. Some spoilies below, so if you want to go in blind, maybe don’t […]

George R. R. Martin in space, book 5

January 19, 2018 by lowercasesee 1 Comment

I love science fiction. I love genre fiction. It is my happy place. This is my ball of wax, my kettle of fish, this is what lights my Bunsen burner. As a series, The Expanse has rapidly become one of my absolutely of all times favorites and, damn, if this wasn’t the best so far. Set hundreds of years in the future, when humanity has colonized Mars, moons, and space stations and when entire generations have been born, lived, and died in space and evolved […]

The Expanse comes back soon!

January 17, 2018 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

It’s nearly impossible to discuss the novella without spoilers for the series but I will try. The Expanse series is one that I recommend to nearly everyone who enjoys really good sci-fi.  There are currently seven novels, six novellas, and two seasons of a tv show on SyFy; season three starts soon. The series takes place a few hundred years in the future wherein humanity lives all across the solar system.  Humans developed the means to travel quickly but not light speed, as in much […]

We’re Goin’ Space to the Wild, Wild West!

January 11, 2018 by Halbs 2 Comments

Book four of the sci-fi series The Expanse, Cibola Burn, is my least-favorite book in the series thus far. While I read the previous three books in a matter of days, this one took me several weeks to finish. Book three also took some time to get going, but ended up being fantastic. I mentioned in a previous review of this series that it seems like each book takes on the flavor of a different genre. Book one was a mystery, book two was a political thriller, […]

Hard to get into at first but then packs a whammy at the end.

January 6, 2018 by narfna Leave a Comment

I actually pre-ordered this and had it downloaded on release day, but never got around to reading it. Turns out there was no rush, it wasn’t the best work I’ve read by these authors, but I did end up seeing the point of it by the end. I finally got around to it because I’m about to start book seven in this series (!) when I finish my current audiobook, and I wanted to have this read by then. For almost all of this novella […]
