I’m with Guy… I like them a bit stern too.

The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith

August 17, 2015 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

*Note: This review was completed in 2015 before the author’s views towards our trans siblings began to be widely known.  My reading experience was what it was and these reviews will remain up, but it should be noted that I find her TERF values abhorrent, which have only become more clear over time, and her doubling down in Summer 2020 has made the decision to walk away from her as a creative force the only acceptable choice for me. I will no longer be supporting […]

More impressive work from Rowling

December 23, 2014 by competitivenonfiction Leave a Comment

I am one of the few people who adored The Casual Vacancy, JK Rowling’s long awaited and highly criticized follow-up to the series that made her a household name. I found it to be an exceptionally smart, if slow, character study; a story that took forever to capture my attention, but that I wound up deeply invested in. The Cuckoo’s Calling, Rowling’s next attempt (under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith), was similarly paced, but seems to have more broad appeal than The Casual Vacancy. The Cuckoo’s Calling is a fantastic read, starring […]

What’s in a name?

May 18, 2014 by popcultureboy 1 Comment

Pen names are funny things aren’t they? It’s pretty impossible for the real author behind them to stay hidden for long. Either the books become so successful that the lack of personal appearances becomes telling, or someone in the know leaks the story just because they can. Sometimes, authors have pen names so they can publish books outside their own genre with impunity (Barbara Vine and Richard Bachman spring to mind here) and it’s no secret who the real author behind it is. It is […]

Robert Galbraith’s Breakout Novel?

January 27, 2014 by genericwhitegirl 2 Comments

We all know that once you see something, it’s not only burned into your retina, but also your mind. And by trying to not imagine a pink elephant, what the first thing is that comes to mind. Is it also possible then, that once I know a book is written by J. K. Rowling, I will always compare it to Harry Potter? The answer is fuck yes. EVERYTHING gets compared to Harry Potter. All other YA books I’ve read? Not as good as Harry Potter. […]
