CBR Review #2: Alanna: The First Adventure

January 14, 2015 by jesslla 1 Comment

The book cover I’m  using is the original cover for the first edition of this book, from back in 1982 (I think). To me, this is the only cover that I even acknowledge. It’s the first one I saw, and the best one. It’s so evocative of the story, whereas the newer ones are just blah. I review this book over on my blog. Sorry, my site is slow. I need my husband to upgrade the hosting to a *faster* site, but he’s cheap. […]

I would do anything for you, but I won’t do that

January 3, 2015 by katie71483 10 Comments

Actually, the title of this review is a complete misnomer. The Song of the Lioness Quartet is a series of four books about a girl named Alanna and her friends and family who work towards helping her become the first lady knight in the Kingdom of Tortall. A few of them know she’s a girl, most just believe her to be a really small boy. No one cuts her any slack. The first of the books is (quite originally!) Alanna: The First Adventure. It’s about the time Alanna spends […]

There is magic in the weaving.

October 29, 2014 by narfna 3 Comments

Sandry’s Book is the first book of Tamora Pierce’s I’ve read that wasn’t set in Tortall, and I enjoyed it very much. It was a compact, precise little book all about people coming together. And, you know, magic and stuff. Fair warning, though. My reading of the book probably suffered because it was my second book in the 24 Hour Readathon a couple of weeks ago. I was highly buzzed on coffee for the first half of the book, and during the second I was […]

BETRAAAAYYYYAAAAAAAAALLL

April 18, 2014 by narfna 3 Comments

A fitting end, even if I’m not happy about it. At all. Except for I’m happy with most of it except for that one part that was AWFUL AND HORRIBLE AND I HATE IT. And the rest of it was great, but I’m bitter. In case you can’t tell, I’m a little too emotional to give this a proper review. I have no idea what I’m about to type. First things first: until THAT THING happened, this was hands down my favorite book in the […]

There is a dog in this named ‘Achoo Curlypaws.’ It’s farking adorable.

I suppose it was sort of inevitable that I wouldn’t like this one as much as I enjoyed Terrier, but I felt Bloodhound (the second book in Pierce’s Beka Cooper trilogy) had some structural and pacing issues that hampered my enjoyment. Bloodhound picks up a year and a half after the events of the last book. Beka has been an official Dog now for almost a year, but she can’t keep a partner. They’re either incompetent or can’t keep up with her. And then she gets saddled with […]

My favorite Tamora Pierce book (so far).

April 16, 2014 by narfna 1 Comment

Well, that was a ridiculously quick 582 pages. I expected to take at least three to four days to get through it, but as soon I started, I just couldn’t seem to stop reading. I think I finished it in a little over a day. Terrier is the first in Tamora Pierce’s latest young adult series, Beka Cooper (sometimes also known as Provost’s Dog). It takes place about 200 years before Alanna: The First Adventure (which was Pierce’s first book, and the first of The […]
