Stephen Graham Jones is a genius. That is my opinion but it is a correct one. #CBRBINGO – New

My Heart is a Chainsaw (The Lake Witch Trilogy, #1) by Stephen Graham Jones

July 27, 2022 by narfna 6 Comments

I am having such a good reading summer. I have had a plethora of five-star reads, including this gem. Also, this book tried to kill me by making me feel too many feelings. Fitting, with the body count and the genre. Like all the books I really love and that give me feelings, especially when I’m not quite sure where those feelings are coming from, I am having a really hard time reviewing My Heart is a Chainsaw. Jade is a teenaged girl in a […]

This is the slasher send-up I wanted

My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones

July 23, 2022 by Mobius_Walker 3 Comments

TW: abuse, alcoholism, self-harm, suicide BINGO: COLD [a portion of the story takes place in the frozen Idaho winter; also there are some cold-blooded murders] Jade is obsessed with horror movies. Specifically she loves slashers. She knows everything there is to know about the movies, the plots, the directors, the film-making process, everything. It is her entire life and personality, to a fault. She doesn’t have much else to do in a small town in Proofrock, Idaho. She even weaves in her slasher obsession into her […]

A successful send-up is tricky to do, and I don’t think this one works

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix

May 24, 2022 by Mobius_Walker 1 Comment

I loved Grady Hendrix’s book Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires. It was a wonderful, satirical send up of vampire novels and the Southern suburbs. I get that is wasn’t for everyone, but Hendrix really nailed his tongue-in-check, nearly meta take on vampire troupes and Southern suburb living. So when I saw that Hendrix had written a book to be a send of slasher films and final girls, I was stoked. Hendrix, however, missed this mark with this one. The set-up is straightforward: Lynette […]

Slash in the pan

The Last Final Girl by Stephen Graham Jones

January 10, 2022 by Caesar's Wife 3 Comments

This was so stupid. Okay, I suppose that is not a very fulsome review… but I’m so cranky that I read this crap. It was my first foray in the offerings of a Kindle Unlimited subscription and… yeesh. So the book is written like a pseudo film script, kind of. It’s a slasher story that is allegedly a love-letter to teen slashers and super self-aware. It was likened to Cabin in the Woods (which is the only reason I read it). It is not like […]

Finally a Book I Could Attach Myself To…

Final Girls by Riley Sager

March 20, 2018 by Melina 2 Comments

Quincy Carpenter is a Final Girl. If you watch horror or slasher movies, you know that the Final Girl is the one who manages to survive against the odds while all of her friends die horrific deaths.  Quincy became one after all of her friends were slaughtered on what should’ve been a fun break from college at a mountain house in the Poconos.  Ten years later, Quincy has stayed out of the public eye, fallen in love and achieved success as a baker.  The almost […]

Family Dinners Are Killer

Strangers by MIchaelbrent Collings

July 2, 2015 by Melina Leave a Comment

We begin with an anniversary. A family prepares to mourn the one year loss of a son and brother but there are two problems–the family is so fractured that they don’t even want to be in the same room as each other and two, there’s a madman who plans on killing them all because of the secrets they are keeping from one another.  From the outside the family seems to have everything.  They have a loving dog, a gigantic house with all the fancy amenities, […]
