Melmoth

Melmoth by Sarah Perry

So this was a 3.5 star read that I rounded up to 4 stars. I didn’t care for the Essex Serpent at all and worried I wouldn’t like this book, but I thought Perry did a good job with this. She took her own spin on Melmoth the Wanderer Novel by Charles Maturin. Just like with that book, Perry pushes the Gothic elements all the while telling several stories within the main story. I thought the writing for the most part was spot-on. I loved […]

My Pen is Dry, The Door is Open, and Something is Waiting

Melmoth: A Novel by Sarah Perry

October 30, 2019 by lumenatrix 1 Comment

This is a modern novel that strikes the perfect feeling of a Gothic novel in the style of Poe or Shelly. It is eerie and creepy with a ton of atmosphere and most of the fear and horror coming from not jump scares, but just that feeling that something is going to happen. Also, the monster is the humans. It’s always the humans… but not always int he way you think. Fair warning, I don’t give any major spoilers ahead, but this is a very […]

Melmoth by Sarah Perry

Helen Franklin is an English ex-pat in Prague on a mission to penalize herself for a mysterious past. However she cannot avoid the friendship of Karel and Thea and for a while she is almost happy. Then Melmoth appears. Melmoth is the an old tale of the wanderer, the one who is there to witness when no one else is and what she sees is the depravity, the loss the despair. Melmoth is just a myth, or so it seems until Karel gets a letter […]

There is something immediately nauseating – hear me out- about this book. You can be nauseous when you feel ill, when you ride a roller coaster, when you are nervous, or when you eat too many sweets. There is a feeling of hopeful dread that climbs over you (and all of the characters within) before you have finished reading the first page. There is a feeling that you have been here – in a cafe in Prague, under an overpass in Manila, in a field […]

The blurbs over-blurbed it.

July 5, 2017 by vel veeter 2 Comments

So I’ve bee seeing this cover blasted all over Goodreads for about a year now. It’s gorgeous. It’s fascinating. It’s interesting. The blurbs for this book compare it to MR James, Henry James, Sarah Waters, and others like that. They say it’s sexy, sumptuous, rich, etc etc etc. It’s ok. It’s pretty ok. The story is about a variety of people who live and move to Essex in east England. It involves a headstrong and experimental surgeon, a minister, a recent widow, and an urban […]
