We’ve got space spiders, a magical mystery, a serial-killer, and a literal deal with the devil. How’s that for a grab bag? (2 stars) Children of Time (Children of Time #1) by Adrian Tchaikovsky I REALLY wanted to like this. I am mad that I didn’t. Set in the future, Children of Time takes place after humans have finished destroying the Earth. A spaceship takes off with the last of humanity in suspended animation, heading towards a planet that has been terraformed in preparation for […]

A mildly magical murder mystery

The only thing worse than not ever receiving my Hogwarts letter would have been not getting one, but three years later seeing my sister get one. Can you imagine being that close but by a simple fluke of I don’t know genetics or something it’s just always out of reach. There are times I really feel for Petunia Dursley (only times!) Magic for Liars is set in a decidedly less-magical Hogwarts – a school for mages, but one that seems almost down to earth. You […]

I was super excited when I got my hands on this at the library. The title popped up as recommended all over my book apps and emails. Fans of Harry Potter, V.E. Schwab, and Lev Grossman’s Magician’s trilogy were into it, so I had high expectations. Unfortunately, that particular well of mysteries set at magic schools is pretty much full to the brim. Twin sisters Ivy and Tabitha Gamble are estranged. Their sisterly bond was torn apart by a dying mother, a grieving father and […]

I just wanted to do my job.

This is a strong three stars for me. It’s really good in a lot of ways, still feels a little limited for some of the choices and a little thin because of them or what they reveal about the novel, but also succeeds to build a world I am interested in and a story I am invested in. So the novel is almost a perfect Venn diagram of Sara Gran, The Magicians, and The Secret Place by Tana French. Ivy Gamble lives in a world […]

Murder at the Magic School

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey

I’ve not had a lot of luck with things highly recommended and hyped by authors whose works I’ve enjoyed.  V.E. Schwab might be an exception. I found out about the impending publication of Magic For Liars from her social media, and picked it up as soon as it came out. The descriptions of the premise as something between Harry Potter and The Magicians is also reasonably accurate; another point for the book, since I frequently don’t quite agree with the blurbs either. The basic idea […]
