Normal Fallacy

Normal People by Sally Rooney

April 6, 2020 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

Normal People is a story told about a man and a woman, whose lives clash together with varying results over the course of a few years. To make things interesting, this story kicks off in their final year of high school when most human beings are arguably at their worst. In the beginning, Connell is the attractive and popular senior, though far from wealthy. He’s a teenager of few words who gets on well with his single mother and tries hard at school. Though he […]

A Study of Modern Anxiety

Conversations With Friends by Sally Rooney

February 6, 2020 by Sidewriter Leave a Comment

This is an interesting book.  Yes, the narrator is self-involved and awful; at times it is very hard to root for her, and on the surface, the story is boring and deserving of hard eye-rolls.  But when you dig below the surface, and apply a little compassion, everything becomes fascinating.  The narrator doesn’t seem to really care about anything, like she’s observing her own life rather than living it — all veneer no substance  — but I found it easy to forgive her.  What I […]

The power in small stories

Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

January 10, 2020 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

Between this and Normal People, Sally Rooney really excels in the small spaces. They’re just stories about people, removed even from extraordinary circumstances. The background isn’t war or conflict or some other extraordinary event, the background is just life. The cynic in me wonders if this isn’t because Rooney is so young that small stories about young people are what’s currently in her wheelhouse, but even if that is the case, very few young authors could tell these stories with half the care and depth that […]

not a series, but out of order none the less

Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

December 31, 2019 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

My complaint against Conversations with Friends is wholly not the fault of the novel, the writer, or the characters within. My complaint is petty. I am being spoiled in lamenting that Conversations with Friends is not another Normal People. I know. It’s a wild assumption, I should know better, and the like- but Normal People was perfect. Conversations with Friends is a stepping stone on the path of Sally Rooney, and I wish that I had heeded a friend’s recommendation and read this one first! That being said, Conversations with Friends also worms a way into […]

Normal People by Sally Rooney

December 30, 2019 by andtheIToldYouSos 4 Comments

Normal People is the feeling that immediately takes hold in your hands when you first pull away from someone that you love. It’s the deep, dull ache that comes from within your bones. The only way to ease the sensation is to try to take slow breaths- but you can’t and they rock through your lungs short and ragged. It’s packing up your car and driving away without an idea of when or how you’ll ever be near that person again. It’s the feeling when you […]

Normal People by Sally Rooney

September 6, 2019 by vel veeter 1 Comment

In this novel, we begin with Connell and Marianne, two teenagers from Sligo on the western coast of Ireland, beginning to know each other in high school. In school, Connell is among the more popular group of kids, who don’t know that in his private life he’s a consummate reader and in spite of his reticence, a smart and thoughtful boy. Marianne on the other, while also being thoughtful and smart and a similar reader, is not popular and in fact is considered uncool and […]
