The Woman in Cabin 10 falls in the genre of “unreliable female narrator suspense/thriller” novel that has become increasingly popular in the last decade. Lo Blacklock is a British journalist whose home is burgled, while she is home, a few days before she is set to profile a cruise to Norway for her magazine. She is a bit shaken and has taken to self medicating with alcohol and anxiety medication. Soon after boarding the ship she has a fateful meeting with a woman in the […]
The Girl on the Hen
I am a sucker for a British thriller. And this one is pretty much ok. It’s perfectly suited to a non-taxing reading or reading event. There’s not a whole to say about depth or intrigue or anything else. But it’s competently-written and competently plotted, and won’t be a book for the ages, like I think Gone Girl is, but it could be the start of a perfectly solid career. If Ruth Ware stops writing books, she will likely be forgotten as a writer in due time. […]
You Really Shouldn’t Share Mascara…That’s My Takeaway From All of This
This book keeps popping up on book lists everywhere and then someone in our book club picked it, but then changed her mind to have us read Just Mercy instead (this was last year which is why I don’t have a review for it). But…I had already purchased the book and so I decided that eventually I would get to it. After reading The Kind Worth Killing I realized that I’ve been missing suspense and mystery in my life. Soooo…I turned to The Woman […]
Maybe don’t read this one alone in the dark?
So our leading lady, Leonora is out of the blue invited to an old friend’s bachelorette party. Only we’re in England, so it’s called a hen party. Or a hen do? Something henny. Anyway, she hasn’t talked to Clare (the hen / bride) in nearly a decade. She’s not really sure why she’s invited, but she asks another friend to go too (she’s also invited). The house they end up at is in the woods, and kinda creepy. Leonora is called Lee, Nora, and Leo, […]
Fun Thriller
My book club is starting the year off with a fast-paced thriller, In a Dark Dark Wood by Ruth Ware. In all the reviews it’s compared to novels like Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. I suppose this is due to the fact that this novel has both unreliable narration and really unlikable people. Aside from that I think the similarity is minor. The novel is the story of Nora Shaw, a crime fiction writer living in London. She is startled to receive […]
Something’s afoot on the fjords
So once again, I can’t remember how I got onto this book, but I feel like someone recommended it to me. I put it on hold at my library like 4 months ago, and there were 52 people ahead of me. I finally just got it last weekend. At my library, you can’t renew books that have holds on them, so I knew I only had two weeks to read this one. It only took me 3 days. And if I started earlier on day […]
