This book completely ate my brain.

September 22, 2014 by narfna 6 Comments

First of all, yes, this is essentially a five star review, but please note, it’s five stars with reservations. The five stars is almost entirely due to the first 1/3 or so of the book (and maybe a little past that) and how it absolutely took over my life. If I could, I’d probably rate the first 1/3 six or seven stars, and the rest four, but that’s obviously not possible, so here we are. The rest of the reason that I settled on five […]

Okay, I’m in this now. Dammit.

August might as well have been Outlander month, for all I paid attention to anything else. I read Outlander late last year and enjoyed it, but I also found it very strange and disturbing in parts (and not in a way that I found altogether explicable). Ultimately, despite my reservations about some of the content (not the things that happened, necessarily, more the way Gabaldon treated them in her prose*), I decided to continue the series, probably one a year to stay current with the show, […]

I’m not convinced

September 8, 2014 by drmllz 4 Comments

I absolutely adore some of Austen’s books–one of my first reviews for Cannonball Read IV was of Northanger Abbey. I love the energy and passion of Pride and Prejudice (“What are men to rocks and mountains?” indeed), the mischief of Emma, and the creaky doors and thunderstorms and laundry lists of Northanger Abbey. I sympathise with Elinor Dashwood, and think she could have done much better in terms of sisters and eventual husbands–but I also sympathise with Marianne’s youthful desire for drama, and think she […]

An affront to everything that makes books good.

September 4, 2014 by alwaysanswerb 3 Comments

I can’t remember the last time I have not finished a book. I don’t know that I have ever not finished a book. But I did not finish this one, Cannonballers. This book was very similar to the entire Fifty Shades trilogy which — lest you wonder — I did finish. I read up to page 111 of The Sweet Spot, and I will spoil the content that happened up to that point, which shouldn’t upset you because you will not want to read this […]

When matricide isn’t an option

August 27, 2014 by alwaysanswerb 14 Comments

Bet Me had a pair of horrible, horrible mothers. I finished the book a few weeks ago, and moreso than many other details, the utter heinousness of both the hero and the heroine’s mothers sticks with me. I’ve met supercilious and cold women like the hero’s mother, so she was at least someone who I believe exists on the planet, but Minerva Dobbs — our heroine — is cursed, having been born of the nastiest caricature of a human. If this story is to be […]

I’ll save you having to read this review: Just go watch The Lizzie Bennet Diaries on YouTube. I mean it. GO!

August 20, 2014 by narfna 4 Comments

Okay, now when you’re done with that, come back and read this review. And then maybe get yourself a copy of The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet and snuggle up in your reading chair for a couple of hours. What this book is, basically, is an adaptation of a YouTube series, which is itself a modern day adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice, told in interactive vlog-form (there are additional in-world videos, Tumblrs, and Twitter accounts, and if you watched live, you could interact with […]
