May we all in our dotage be proud to say, “I was adored once too”

From Hollywood with Love by Scott Meslow

May 19, 2022 by Ellesfena 5 Comments

I don’t love romantic comedies, but I like a few of them very much. I’m probably not the target audience for this book–but I did still enjoy most of it. From Hollywood with Love alternates back and forth between chapters about specific romantic comedies, and shorter essays about certain rom-com stars. Some of the essays about specific actors were interesting (and some weren’t–it probably depends on which actors you like), but mostly I enjoyed the chapters about the movies. The chapter about Pretty Woman was especially interesting to […]

After the Hero’s Quest Ends

So This Is Ever After by FT Lukens

April 12, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

After defeating the Vile One as the prophecy foretold, Arek has somehow ended up as king – and now he must find someone to wed if he is to survive his eighteenth birthday. And his first choice, his best friend and mage Matt, obviously doesn’t like him back. I was very excited by the idea of this book – the Chosen One having to settle down after fulfilling his prophecy and now actually getting on with the business of governing his newfound kingdom. However, though […]

a #cannonbookclub favorite RETURNS!

It All Comes Back to You by Farah Naz Rishi

September 6, 2021 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

Last year, during our The Future is Queer book club event, we were introduced to the sweet and complicated world of Farah Naz Rishi with her debut novel, I Hope You Get This Message. She returns next week with a decidedly different but still warmly familiar follow up: It All Comes Back to You. IHYGTM sits firmly on the edge of an apocalypse; aliens have made contact with Earth and time is quickly slipping away. It All Comes Back to You is firmly planted in another […]

You make infidelity sound like a hole in the sidewalk.

Another Cannonball Read Rainbow Rowell Success Story! This is my first Rainbow Rowell novel, and I would not have found her so quickly were she not a huge CBR favorite. And I get it, but also I don’t? She is undeniably a damn delight. But more to point about this specific book, the part of me that’s still mad that “Bridget Jones’ Baby” ended with a fucking wedding is really bummed out that Lincoln (our hero) ends his Attachments journey to emotional health and adult sustainability […]

Well, I guess this is growing up.

January 24, 2016 by Halbs 2 Comments

A couple weeks ago, I reviewed Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. I loved the book because it perfectly captured the awe and sweetness and excitement and heartbreak of growing up. Jenny Han wrote a sequel to that book called P.S. I Still Love You, which I’m reviewing here. It picks up pretty much right where TATBILB ends, so I will do my best to refrain from any specific details or spoilers. Suffice it to say, you shouldn’t read this one without […]

My First Rainbow Rowell

September 22, 2014 by Fiat.Luxury Leave a Comment

I generally avoid romantic comedies as a genre, but there are some that I will watch every time they’re on TV, despite the plot holes etc.; this book felt like those.  It had a good pace and lots of charm, I liked the variety of characters, I loved the depiction of female friendship. Sort of spoilers ahead: My main problem was that Lincoln, although well written, and although I was rooting for him, just didn’t seem all that interesting.  I wasn’t sure what Beth saw in […]
