I’ve read another book since having finished Julie Anne Long’s It Happened One Midnight, so I have forgotten some of the particulars, but I enjoyed another entry of the Pennyroyal Green series that seems so endless. This particular book, the eighth, is the story of Jonathan Redmond (third son of an aristocrat of unremembered rank) and Thomasina de Bellesteros, a popular, mysterious and attractive women who entertains in an eccentric Countess’ salon every week. Jonathan Redmond is a rake, or so his character description and […]
Pirates, Forbidden Love and a Quest
Mackenzi Lee’s The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is ripe for film or TV adaptation and is something I totally would have loved reading as a teenager. However, I am older than Lee’s target audience and still enjoyed the ride, but with some prudish gasps and doubts interspersed here and there. Guide is the story of young Henry Montague, the oldest son of an earl, bound for the traditional continental tour young men would take prior to settling down, with his best friend Percy […]
Shitty Stuff Happening to Sad, Angry, Poor People
After serious reading I like to read something more quick and dirty, so I finally got around to reading Gillian Flynn’s Dark Places, something I’d bought for a Kindle deal of the day ages ago and never felt like approaching. I was right to be hesitant I guess. While l enjoyed Gone Girl for the most part, I think I’ve gotten sick of the trend of having incredibly unlikeable main characters and awful situations and twists. Flynn has all of these in Dark Places and […]
Don’t do the audiobook
I really should stop trying audiobooks. Though I can listen to podcasts fairly attentively (depending on the subject matter of course), for whatever reason I don’t enjoy audiobooks. I space out a lot and if the person reading it aloud has an annoying voice I just can’t get into it. For these and other reasons I didn’t love Rebecca Solnit’s The Mother of All Questions. One of the new book clubs I’ve joined is all local moms with a feminist bent, so our book selections […]
Teen Angst Kills
Karen M. McManus’ One of Us Is Lying is often described as a blend of Gossip Girl or Pretty Little Liars and The Breakfast Club. Five high school seniors walk into detention one afternoon and by the end of the day, one of them is dead. When it turns out the death was a homicide, naturally the other four students are suspects. When we discover the victim ran a nasty gossip app that was about to reveal dirty secrets on the other four kids in […]
Generation X Geeks Apply Here
I was born in March of 1979, so I consider myself (whether correctly or not) some of the youngest Gen-Xers and generally a child of the 80s and 90s. The 90s were where my tastes in music were more formulated, but the 80s was my childhood. Though I generally avoid fantasy gaming, rpg’s, etc., I knew I would find something appealing in Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One. And, to be honest, though it’s been sitting on my kindle for over two years now, I wanted […]
