And another one…

March 1, 2015 by Malin 5 Comments

Arthur Leander, ageing movie-star, dies of a heart attack on stage at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto. On stage is eight-year-old Kristen Raymonde, witnessing the death of a man who had been nothing but kind to her. Jeevan Chaudhary, former paparazzo photographer and entertainment journalist, now an EMT in training, jumps up on stage tries to save Arthur’s life with CPR. Later that evening, travelling home in the snow, he receives a phone call from a friend, working in the ER. There is a flu […]

A superfluous review

February 27, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 4 Comments

Everyone else has very eloquently summarized the plot of Station Eleven the first hundred times it was reviewed, so I’ll let Goodreads do the heavy lifting here (this is a half joke because I let Goodreads do the heavy lifting a lot of the time even when I’m not the last person in line to review a book): “One snowy night Arthur Leander, a famous actor, has a heart attack onstage during a production of King Lear. Jeevan Chaudhary, a paparazzo-turned-EMT, is in the audience and […]

Beyond my horizons

February 24, 2015 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

I initially grabbed Beyond Shame because it was free on Kindle, and then picked up its sequel, Beyond Control, because I was intrigued. Like many series of its ilk, it’s kind of more-of-the-same, kind of not, and YMMV on how much you enjoy each individual book based on how much you like the lead couple. The series is fairly hardcore erotic romance, and it’s definitely out of my comfort zone, so it’s kind of hard for me to review it. Public group sex is the […]

Book Club? YASSSSS!

February 22, 2015 by staramour 5 Comments

Could this book be a little bit longer please? As the first few books from my Cannonball did not really grab me, I was glad when this one did.  To say grab though is a bit of an understatement.  It was like getting pulled by the ear over to a scene and someone shouting into my ear “LOOK AT THIS!”  In the posting of my review, I see that it is going to be the Book Club on 9 March.  Definitely get it and you’ll […]

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much are gifs worth?

February 18, 2015 by soapyme 6 Comments

So, what did I think of The Infinite Sea? I want to leave it at that, but apparently there’s some stupid word minimum for reviews. Goddamn it. Anyway, a friend saw I was reading this and asked how I liked it. I said, “I’m about 2/3 of the way through and so far, nothing has happened to justify its existence.” She said, “High praise indeed.” But it’s true. The Infinite Sea fails to do what any competent sequel does, i.e. expand the universe and raise the stakes. Off the top of my head, here […]

“What I mean to say is, the more you remember, the more you’ve lost.”

February 17, 2015 by narfna 9 Comments

First, some things you should know about me, for like, context and stuff: 1. I usually avoid apocalypse books like the plague (or more apropos, the Georgia Flu). Most of the time, even thinking about apocalyptic situations makes me panic. 2. I am a Shakespeare nerd. 3. I am a Star Trek nerd. 4. I cannot explain why I loved this book so much, because most of my reaction was completely sub-conscious. I have gotten gradually more stingy with my five star reviews since I […]
