“She looked in the mirror and gasped. Melissa gasped back at her. For a long time, she stood there, just blinking. George smiled, and Melissa smiled too.”

George by Alex Gino

This was such a lovely little book. I’m glad it exists, and not just for little trans kids, but for all kids. It encourages empathy, imagination, and kindness, something all kids (and grown-ups) can always benefit from. George is the birthname of our female protagonist, who is in the 4th grade, and knows that even though she was born with a boy’s body, inside she has always been a girl. She has never told anyone this (although we get hints that her family knows something […]

A Small Revolution by Jimin Han

October 29, 2019 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So I got this book back in April 2017, and I just got around to reading it last month.  I guess there was maybe a reason for that!  It seemed like it was going to be good, but I really didn’t like it that much.  Conveniently though, it fulfills my #Own Voices Bingo square!  Jimin Han is a Korean American author, and her main characters are all Korean American. The main character is a Korean American college student in Pennsylvania who met the love of […]

The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison

August 25, 2019 by KimMiE" 1 Comment

CBR11bingo: Own Voices I struggled for quite some time trying to decide what to read for CBR11 Bingo’s center square. I’m so glad that I finally landed on Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye, not just because it’s a book I definitely should have read by now, but because it’s moving and beautiful and painful. I expected The Bluest Eye to be powerful; I didn’t expect it to be poetic. This novel tells the story of Pecola Breedlove, a young African American girl growing up in […]

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

August 5, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

#CBR11 Bingo: Pajiba (reviewed by Kayleigh here) (Would also work for “Award winner”, “Own voices”, “Listicle”, “Cannonballer Says”, and possibly, “Far and Away”) Official book description: Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola’s third boyfriend in a row is dead. Korede’s practicality is the sisters’ saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body, and she keeps […]

We Are Never Meeting in Real Life by Samantha Irby

July 28, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

#CBR11 Bingo: The Collection (Could also work for True Story, Cannonballer Says, Own Voices and Rainbow Flag) Official book description: Sometimes you just have to laugh, even when life is a dumpster fire. With We Are Never Meeting in Real Life., “bitches gotta eat” blogger and comedian Samantha Irby turns the serio-comic essay into an art form. Whether talking about how her difficult childhood has led to a problem in making “adult” budgets, explaining why she should be the new Bachelorette–she’s “35-ish, but could easily […]

Not Another Family Wedding by Jackie Lau

July 23, 2019 by Malin 11 Comments

3.5 stars #CBR11 Bingo: Summer Read (would also work for Cannonballer Recommends and/or Own Voices) Official book description: Natalie Chin-Williams might be a cranky professor of climatology who thinks the world is doomed, but she believes in lasting love…just not for herself. She has a long history of failed relationships, plus the men she dates inevitably want children and she doesn’t.  Now thirty-six and single, Natalie expects endless comments about her love life when she attends her baby sister’s wedding. Worse, weddings are always drama-filled disasters […]
