This book rubbed me the wrong way

Anthem by Noah Hawley

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

I’m going to try and explain why I was so irritated with this, but I freely admit that it might just have been me.  I’ve had some issues and frustrations this year with mansplainers… which may have contributed to just how much Hawley’s holier-than-thou, pompous tone resonated and irked me. I was looking forward to this one, because I loved Before the Fall and Hawley’s TV work.  But I was so frustrated and disappointed.  There’s a glimmer of a great story here – but it […]

Another book with an interesting concept that meandered aimlessly and ran full steam ahead into despair

Anthem by Noah Hawley

March 29, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

The summary of this book may sound morbid, and it may be odd that it drew me in, but here we are.  I like a mystery. Here is what my library’s audiobook / ebook app had as a synopsis: Suddenly and without precedent or explanation, something awful has been happening to teenagers across the globe, forcing parents to face a lonely future without their children.  At the site of each loss, there lies a cryptic message, A11, which may be the clue to solving the […]

“The air had the same temperature and quality as a patty melt.” Oo…kay?

Before the Fall by Noah Hawley

March 26, 2021 by Bothari43 2 Comments

I thoroughly enjoyed Legion (the first season, at least) and Fargo (the first couple seasons, at least), so when I found out showrunner Noah Hawley had written a few books, I wanted to check one out to see if that talent worked on the page as well. Verdict: The book starts with the crash of a private plane. A tiny, fancy plane leaves from Martha’s Vineyard, carrying two rich men, their wives, two children, and a painter who was friends with one of the wives. […]

Episode 1-18: Sad, Pathetic Little Bastards

Before the Fall, What Could Possibly Go Wrong?, Thirteen Reasons Why by Noah Hawley, Jodi Taylor, Jay Asher

https://killingmykindle.com/2018/05/07/episode-1-18-sad-pathetic-little-bastards/ Wherein I Review: 64. Before the Fall by Noah Hawley 65. What Could Possibly Go Wrong? (St. Mary’s Chronicles #6) by Jodi Taylor 66. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher In which I happen up on a multitude of not “Nice Guys” but entitled men and boys throughout some solid books.  Guys who feel like they are owed the affections of a girl.  Noah Hawley unpacks the baggage of his mystery in fascinating and infuriating ways.  Jodi Taylor keeps the hits coming with St. […]

Everyone Has Their Path (or why I need to work on my astronavigation skills!)

Before The Fall by Noah Hawley

March 18, 2018 by Jenny S 2 Comments

I love when I read a mystery or thriller that is so tightly structured and interestingly written that it stays with me for days and sometimes weeks after I finish it.  Noah Hawley’s novel, Before The Fall, was that kind of book for me. The novel pulled me in both because of the swimming angle and the idea of chance and paths crossing.  A private plane going from Martha’s Vineyard to New York City crashes into the ocean.  Twelve people get on the plane (including […]

Crash into you

Before the Fall by Noah Hawley

March 1, 2018 by Carriejay 1 Comment

Scott Burroughs, a painter living in Martha’s Vineyard, takes a last minute seat on a private plane, only to have it crash into the sea 16 minutes after take off. He emerges from the depths to hear a child’s cry. Calling on all his strength (and experience as a swimmer) he manages to get the child and himself through miles of churning water to land. They are the only survivors. The little boy, JJ, is the son of a wealthy media mogul, David Bateman. His […]
