The Disaster Gay Detective Agency

Disasters indeed!

The Disaster Gay Detective Agency by Lev A.C. Rosen

January 11, 2026 by LB 1 Comment

I received an advance copy from the publisher via Netgalley for review purposes; this in no way influences my review. I’ve loved Lev AC Rosen’s books for a while now, and seeing he had a new contemporary mystery I knew I needed to get my hands on it. And this does not disappoint! It’s such a delightful, chaotic mess of a book, and I love the main characters so much. Brandon is a gay Jewish man living in New York and working for a hotel […]

“To call them the weaker sex is to utter a hideous mockery. They are the stronger sex, the nosier, the more persevering, the most self-assertive sex.”

Lady Audley's Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon

January 11, 2026 by Pooja Leave a Comment

The lovely second Lady Audley is most fortunate, having been elevated in the world from governess to peeress by her marriage to the rich and doting Sir Audley. But, as Sir Audley’s nephew Robert will soon learn, she has a dangerous secret which she will go to any lengths to conceal. Lady Audley’s Secret belongs to the genre of  Victorian ‘sensation novels’ be, which ar a precursor to the more openly violent pulp novels which were popular in the 20th century. Previously I’ve read a […]

“I don’t know if any of the people we know are suspicious or whether they’re just trying to live their lives.”

The List of Suspicious Things by Jennie Godfrey

January 5, 2026 by narfna Leave a Comment

Thanks to NetGalley and Tantor Media | Tantor Audio for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the contents of my review. I’m a little annoyed that this was marketed as a mystery when it is very much not, but it was a very good book, so I can’t in the end remain annoyed. I just wish I’d been able to set my expectations accordingly. This is, in fact, historical fiction that errs into literary territory on occasion, with a smidgeon of crime for light flavor. This takes place […]

“There was, she thought, not very much difference in the behavior of a cat and a high-handed, chauvinistic Tudor autodidact in the body of a cat. The only thing to truly set them apart was the vocabulary.”

The Village Library Demon-Hunting Society by C.M. Waggoner

January 4, 2026 by Pooja 2 Comments

After solving her sixteenth murder in five years, small-town librarian Sherry Pinkwhistle is only just beginning to grow alarmed by the sheer number of death piling up in Winesap. But when her boyfriend is murdered and her cat gets possessed by a demon called himself Sir Thomas Cromwell, Sherry becomes sure there is something dark at work. This is the book for every person who has looked at how many books can pile up in a cozy mystery series and wondered what on earth is […]

The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill

The scream that brought them together

The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill

December 28, 2025 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I’m completing my quarter cannonball with The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill. The novel is a book within a book. Hannah is writing a mystery focused on Freddie, an Australian woman on a writing fellowship in Boston. She meets three strangers in the Boston library reading room: Cain, a fellow writer and handsome, Walt, a rich law student with no work ethic, and Marigold, a goth-esque psychology student. They hear a blood-curdling scream like someone being murdered…but no body is found. That is, […]

The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth

The Last Murder at the End of the World by Stuart Turton

December 25, 2025 by Pooja Leave a Comment

When a scientist is murdered in the last outpost of humanity left in the world, the villagers must seek justice or all face death. I read Turton’s debut The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle several years ago, and while I enjoyed piecing together the mystery and the science fiction underpinnings of the story, I though the solution got too convoluted in the end. This book has a similar problem, but as the focus for much of the story is the science fiction setting and […]
