Okay, sure. Girl, Train, Murder. Fine.

November 22, 2016 by tillie 2 Comments

Okay, first of all, Rachel, the main character, is in her thirties. She’d a woman. She’s a WOMAN on the train. Second of all, uhm, sure, fine, I guess. The girl on the train is an easy read. Not much happens on the pages, the story is pretty straightforward even as Rachel blacks out and forgets large parts of it. But blackouts do not equal nuance. It’s impossible to miss anything. Everything that is lost in black outs or changes in point of view, are […]

Harry, stop objectifying the Queen of Air and Darkness. She will END YOU.

This re-read has been a success so far. Weird, but good weird. It was weird revisiting the first three books, which I originally didn’t like enough to continue the series, on audio for the first time. I knew that James Marsters was a huge part of the reason I ended up liking this series so much, but I don’t think I realized just how much until starting this re-read. I liked the first three books more on re-read in large part because I’m invested in […]

Cross, Cross, Cross …

November 17, 2016 by xoxoxoe 1 Comment

As I stated earlier, I have been reading a lot of James Patterson lately. I have so much happening on the home front these days that these mostly mindless mysteries have been somewhat soothing. But I think I’m done for a while. I thought that the books solo-authored by Patterson would be less factory-like, but alas, that doesn’t seem to be the case. As much as I liked the first novel featuring his African-American psychologist/detective Alex Cross, in the series, Along Came A Spider, the rest of […]

“Like Digby himself said: The truth is almost always disappointing…”

November 10, 2016 by Caitycat 1 Comment

Save Trouble Is a Friend of Mine is a mystery with an overachieving girl, Zoe, and a boy who is a young version of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock. Digby is brusque and tactless, he even looks like Cumberbatch. He just shows up outside her door one day, and next thing you know, they are searching for a missing girl and investigating the possible cult across the street from her new house. A Lot Less Special Than I Wanted it to Be

November 9, 2016 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

Last year I went to Washington, DC for the first time as an adult, and I loved it. I’m not a huge fan of most cities, but I AM a huge fan of American history so I had a great time. When my mother-in-law loaned me this book, I was excited to read a mystery that took place in one of my favorite cities, written by the daughter of a president (actually I just read on Wikipedia that these were ghostwritten). What a disappointment this […]

Gone, Baby, Gone

October 28, 2016 by expandingbookshelf 7 Comments

It’s the kind of story that keeps parents up at night. After Anne and Marco Conti’s babysitter cancels at the last minute, the couple argues about what to do. Anne wants to cancel their dinner date next door. Her neighbor Cynthia has made it very clear their six-month old daughter Cora is not welcome. Marco convinces Anne to go anyway. They’ll bring the baby monitor. They’ll check on their daughter every thirty minutes. She’ll be fine. Annie, wine-drunk, struggling with postnatal depression and watching her […]
