Light, Lies, and Hope

May 12, 2017 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

When I finished this book, I quickly posted on Goodreads my placeholder review, as I do with all books. Usually it is just the star rating and the phrase “full review to follow”. However, that wasn’t enough to wrap up how I was feeling. Instead, I wrote “It is almost unthinkable that a series can be getting better, more nuanced, and satisfying in its seventh installment but that is where we are with Louise Penny and Inspector Gamache” because this might be the best book […]

Mmmmmm. Butter chicken.

May 9, 2017 by esme 1 Comment

My rating for this is probably a 3 for the first 1/2 and a 4 for the second. I picked out Tarquin Hall’s The Case of the Deadly Butter Chicken: A Vish Puri Mystery almost a year ago when I was visiting Macalaster College with my niece. I hadn’t read any of the other books in the series, but thought it looked amusing and I love books that really place you in a location. It wasn’t necessary for me to read previous entries to understand […]

Satisfying end to the series

May 1, 2017 by Lindzgrl Leave a Comment

This is the third book in Stephen King’s Bill Hodges trilogy, so if you haven’t read the prior two I would skip this review to avoid spoilers.   Full disclosure, I am a huge King fan, and while I wouldn’t say I have a bias when it comes to his stuff (he has certainly written things I haven’t enjoyed) I am naturally inclined to like his work.   End of Days brings the Bill Hodges trilogy to its completion, starting with Mr. Mercedes and then […]

I Wish There Were More of These

April 29, 2017 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

Man, I loved these books. I slowly stretched them out over a whole year so I could really enjoy them. The Hilary Tamar books are a series of legal mysteries, which I know might sound horrifyingly boring, but in fact they are a true delight. If you like mysteries, or witty, clever writing, you should try these. Sadly, there are only four of them, but they’re all fantastic. The Sibyl in Her Grave is the last one of the series, and like the others, it’s […]

Don’t go there!

April 16, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Things I liked: meeting Leander, the Mission Impossible-like mystery and accompanying reveals and re-reveals about characters and events, Jamie’s dad, and meeting Charlotte’s dad. Things I didn’t like: Charlotte and her mother, Charlotte with her family, the hints about Charlotte and her future, and the separate investigations going on at the same time by characters who each want to solve things first (this of course does not end well). Charlotte gets more withdrawn and less relatable than before, which is kind of a shame because […]

Rachel really makes for the most hilariously inappropriate bridesmaid ever

April 10, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

4.5 stars This is book five in a series, and most definitely not the best place to start. Begin with Dead Witch Walking, and possibly skip this review if you don’t want spoilers for earlier books in the series. There are dead werewolf women turning up in the morgue, apparently having committed suicide. Someone else appears to be murdering werewolves after keeping them tied up, and after some investigation, independent runner and calamity-prone witch Rachel Morgan is pretty sure she knows what the connection between […]

I really enjoyed this one. I was particularly amused at Lady Catherine deBoutgh’s disgust at her assassin’s incompetence.
