Even though someone else said it better

September 19, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader 5 Comments

I saw a Goodreads description or review that called Cantero the heir to the Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams throne. Nope to that. The more I think on it, the more I like This Body’s Not Big Enough For Both Of Us, but it’s not the same level of clever, especially since it’s much more limited in the scope of the allusions. The wordplay of Pratchett is not there, nor is the narrative originality, or at least not original in the same way. Cantero’s pretty direct […]

Maybe in a different time and a different place…

September 17, 2018 by Jake Leave a Comment

Although her books are beginning to come back into print at last, and most (if not all) of her oeuvre is available for digital download, Margaret Millar is a name sadly lost to the annals of history. She was actually a successful writer for a long time who won an Edgar Award in 1956 for Beast In View. Had she lived today, she’d be right up there with women such as Megan Abbott and Laura Lippman who dominate bestseller lists with their exciting blend of thriller and […]

Män som hatar kvinnor (Men Who Hate Women)

CBR Bingo entry: And so it begins. And BINGO was his name-o! I originally considered reading this novel for the CBR Bingo square “The book was better?” because I have seen both the American and Swedish versions of the film. In fact, I saw them both on the same day. My husband and I went to see the 2011 Hollywood production starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara and appreciated it, so we decided to come home and watch the original Swedish version on Netflix. Because nothing […]

“There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t”

September 13, 2018 by Malin Leave a Comment

Aza Holmes doesn’t have a lot of friends, and her best friend Daisy, a gregarious and outgoing fan fiction writer, sometimes finds her a bit exhausting. This is not surprising, as Aza struggles with anxiety and OCD. When local billionaire Russell Davis Picket goes missing and there is a reward offered for news of his whereabouts, Daisy remembers that Aza knows his son. Daisy orchestrates a scenario so that Aza can reconnect with Davis, who she hasn’t seen for a few years. Aza and Davis […]

Locked room murder mystery, in space!

September 11, 2018 by narfna 4 Comments

I stayed up entirely too late finishing this. It was really very hard for me to put down, and that alone earns it the privilege of being bumped up to four stars. I did have some quibbles with it, but in the end they were minor, and I was compelled by the book to finish (always a good sign). Six Wakes, to boil it down, is about six clones on a generation ship who wake up to find that they have all been murdered, and […]

So…I guess I like James Ellroy now?

September 10, 2018 by Jake Leave a Comment

I began the calendar year 2018 with the belief that, among other things, I would never be a fan of James Ellroy. Many readers have that one author they think they should like, perhaps because they are drawn to said author’s specific genre (for me, that’s mystery novels, particularly moody period pieces set in LA). And they try, try, and try again to get into their books with no luck. James Ellroy is that writer for me. I read American Tabloid years ago and it was a […]

I really enjoyed this one. I was particularly amused at Lady Catherine deBoutgh’s disgust at her assassin’s incompetence.
