Another in the series with young Roman cop Nic Costa, this one deals with the fall to his death of a man whose teenaged daughter is obsessed with an ancient Italian story from the 16th century, in which Beatrice Cenci, a girl sexually abused by her father, ends up murdering him, only to be beheaded by the Vatican as punishment. Mina Gabriel, along with her brother and mother, has a secret to hide, and it is Costa’s job to figure it out. Although the family […]
Clans and Cats and Murder, Oh My.
Radical Daffodils Review of Crazy, VA Honestly, I only picked Crazy, VA up because it was free the day I downloaded it. Much to my delight, it turned out to be the perfect weekend read: an enjoyable, engaging murder mystery centered on the relationship between a woman, her cat, and the town called Crazy.
This book is mesmerizing
This is my first foray into the works of Swedish crime-novelist Kepler, and it was –umm — mesmerizing. The horrible slaughter of nearly an entire family leaves Detective Joona Linna determined to solve the mystery, and as readers learn right away, the highly-respected detective is always right and is famous for his “told you so”s. Drama without Passion
This is a fairly well-written but slow-paced story that takes place in the tiny town of Witless Bay, Newfoundland, surrounding a handful of colorful characters who struggle to make sense of their lives with relatively little connection to the outside world. Fabian is the product of a faltering marriage, who early on discovers that his […]
He’s baaaaack!
With Sycamore Row, John Grisham is back not only with his characters and location from A Time to Kill, but with his story telling.
A dismal view of marriage
This debut novel is a complex read, which looks at three deeply screwed-up marriages largely from the uncomprehending standpoint of the husbands, two of whom are detectives investigating the possible murder of his spouse by the third husband. Adding a little spice to it all is the fact that one of the detectives is the former Dr. Sam Sheppard, the (in)famous real-life doctor who spent a decade in jail for the bludgeoning to death of his own pregnant wife, who was then released following a […]
