I might just skip straight to the last book, which is about the hero’s dick brother. I’d be interested to see how she humanizes him.

Slightly Married (Bedwyn Saga, #1) by Mary Balogh

March 2, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

About five to six years back, I bought a bunch of “classic” aka popular/former bestseller romance novels at my local used bookstore (and by bunch, I mean around twenty to thirty of them in one go) and have barely touched them since because I am a raccoon who is only attracted to shiny things. Pulled this one out of my TBR Jar, though, early in January, and it did feel nice to finally get around to it. And it was fine! Utterly normal, nothing surprising. […]

Anna Snow…or Snow White?

Someone to Love by Mary Balogh

February 23, 2021 by Catticus Finch 2 Comments

Humphrey Westcott, Earl of Riverdale, has died, leaving behind a fortune that will forever alter the lives of everyone in his family—including the daughter no one knew he had… This is book one in the Westcott series, which I had to read after finishing book seven (wrong order, I know!).  The character of Avery Archer, Duke of Netherby, caught my interest in the other book so I had to find his story.  This one begins with Anna Snow, left at an orphanage in Bath at […]

Romancing Lady Jessica

Someone to Romance by Mary Balogh

February 18, 2021 by Catticus Finch 2 Comments

This is book seven (!) in the Westcott series, so I was prepared for a bit of confusion over some of the characters as I hadn’t read the first six.  Still, the overwhelming amount of Westcott family members, in-laws, children and family backstory was almost too much.  I decided to persevere, and focus on the main characters of Jessica and Gabriel, and stress over how Aunt Matilda or Cousin Abigail et al fit into the mix. Jessica, step-sister to the Duke of Netherby, has been […]

A soothing, if a bit dark, seaside romance

The Proposal by Mary Balogh

December 9, 2020 by Nart Leave a Comment

I liked this one! Hallelujah! Balogh is a safe choice for me, because I know she doesn’t do problematic heroes and her heroines tend to have actual personalities and usually explore trauma in a pretty interesting way. This book is no different. Plot: widow falls on the beach, badly spraining her ankle. Fortunately, a military hero is nearby to meet up with what we can probably call a PTSD support group for people who didn’t know what PTSD was yet. Realizing no one else is […]

A Good Road Trip Love Story

The Escape (The Survivors' Club #3) by Mary Balogh

December 9, 2018 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I have a library hold backlog gathering on my kitchen table, so I decided best plan was to knock out a few quick reads and hopefully catch up. Part of the backlog is a few of The Survivors’ Club books by Mary Balogh. I enjoyed The Proposal and The Arrangement earlier this year and had immediately put holds on the rest of the series. In typical me fashion I was nervous about the next book, The Escape, when I wrote my review for The Arrangement […]

Balogh Gives Us Young Love (CBR10Bingo)

The Arrangement (Survivors Club #2) by Mary Balogh

September 13, 2018 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

I have stuff going on in my personal life right now (as do we all from time to time) so I found myself ready to check out of reality for a bit and sink into a safely fictional reality where things end happily. Off to Romancelandia I went to visit Mary Balogh’s Survivors’ Club and check off the Brain Candy square for bingo. The Arrangement is the second book in the series, and I’ll admit that I was a bit put off by which characters […]
