Short Work

I Must Say: My Life as a Humble Comedy Legend by Martin Short

September 21, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

For most of its brief length, I Must Say is a fairly good but standard exemplar of the celebrity memoir. The early struggle, the camaraderie of breaking into show business and finding your people, the name-droppy stories about show business parties,  and some behind the scenes anecdotes from his films and TV shows, which in Short’s case obviously includes SCTV, Three Amigos, SNL, Father of the Bride, winning a Tony, etc. (I Must Say was published in 2014, long before the advent of Only Murders […]

Marty’s Memoir

March 1, 2016 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

Martin Short is one of those people that, whether you’ve seen any of his work, you just know who he is. From his 80s heyday the only film I’ve seen is Three Amigos, which came out two years before I was born, but was a favorite of my father’s. He’s probably not the most famous/ recognizable face from his comedy class of Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, John Candy, Dan Akroyd etc but he has had a prolific career as someone willing to go the extra […]

SCTV, SNL, Broadway & Hollywood

June 4, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I didn’t know too much about Martin Short before listening to the audio version of his autobiography, I Must Say. His time on SCTV and SNL came before I started watching those shows, and his late night talk show on Comedy Central — Primetime Glick — made me crazy (he has created a lot of intentional obnoxious characters — Jiminy Glick, Ed Grimley, etc.). But he’s been in a few of my favorite movies, The Three Amigos, The Father of the Bride movies and Jungle 2 Jungle (Mimisiku!), so I’m familiar […]

He Really Does Seem So Sweet

March 2, 2015 by ASKReviews 4 Comments

I love the movies Pure Luck and Innerspace. They are ridiculous, and probably do not hold up, but I love them. I also hold a special place in my heart for The Three Amigos. The one thing they have in common? Martin Short. This is a very sweet book, which makes sense, because Mr. Short is, by all reports, a very sweet guy. He seems kind, generous, and funny in a dorky way that works for some people but not everyone. And if written by […]
