“I guess maybe that’s how it works in families that love each other unconditionally. You can fight without fear of losing them, and be honest without consequences or repercussions.”

Kiss Her Once For Me by Alison Cochrun

January 3, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

I’m two for two with Alison Cochrun! Although, for me, the slight edge goes to The Charm Offensive, I still really enjoyed my time with this second book of hers. Last Christmas, Ellie met Jack in Powell’s when they both went for a copy of Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home, and over a cute argument over “shared custody”, and Jack poking gentle fun at Ellie (who had been crying alone and talking to a footstool as if it were her friend) they start to bond. Jack […]

There Is a Castle On an Island…I Like to Go there in my Sleep

The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery

February 1, 2021 by wicherwill 2 Comments

What a delightful book, I should have expected nothing less from the author behind the Anne of Green Gables book series I love wholeheartedly. You can read the description of this book and immediately know the entire plot. Nothing is surprising here, and I’m definitely not complaining. As it were, I learnt about this book from a fanfic retelling which warned of “spoilers” for the book, but seriously do you think that a book like this (with such high ratings, to boot) would end any other way? […]

Emotional whiplash

The Marrying Season by Candace Camp

December 8, 2017 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

Genevieve Stafford, our heroine, is considered to be aloof, respectable and everything a lady of Regency should be.  She’s also worried that she will never marry, so she decides to pray at the shrine of St. Dwynwen to find love.  The legend of the saint was told to her previously (in one of the other books in this series, which I haven’t read) but she finally decided it couldn’t hurt.  And voila, her prayers are answered and she meets Lord Dursford as she is leaving […]

A new to me author I will warily keep my eye on

A Duchess in Name by Amanda Weaver

November 30, 2016 by Ellepkay Leave a Comment

This is a Victorian marriage of convenience story.  With a description like that I was willing to try a new author.  Victoria is an American heiress who has been raised to try and marry in to the British aristocracy.  She has no expectations of a love match and all she really wants is the freedom from her parents that a marriage will bring.  Andrew is the second son of an impoverished  duke whose older brother has recently died.  Victoria’s father basically wins Andrew in a […]

Mediocre Sports Romance

The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata

September 16, 2016 by Ellepkay 2 Comments

This book is not a ‘good’ book, but it’s one I enjoyed.  It’s biggest downfall is lack of editing.  It runs nearly 700 pages and she repeatedly misuses the word ‘passed’ for ‘past’.  No, seriously, I’m not sure what was wrong with me when reading this.  Misusing words like that would normally be a complete dealbreaker for me, and yet, here we are.  I actively chose this book because it was the first week of the NFL season and I wanted to get in the […]
