Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Hammer of Thor by Rick Riordan

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Ship of the Dead by Rick Riordan

This is for the Youth Bingo Square. Rick Riordan is a pretty big deal in my house. My younger child (aged 11) has been reading through all of his books in a continuous, never-ending, are-you-really-doing-this-again loop for the last three years. Of the series written by Riordan, the Magnus Chase books are probably my second favorite. The Sword of Summer introduces Magnus, a homeless teenager living in Boston. He has been homeless for two years, since the death of his mother to glowing blue wolves. […]

Missing the Beatles and Norse Insults

January 26, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

First, I’ve gotta say that I’m glad I got the Barnes and Noble exclusive on this one; the Norse insult generator in the back is fun if a little limited. So overall, the third book in the Magnus Chase series is pretty standard Rick Riordan fun. There’s plenty of action, and some touching moments mixed in. Seriously, if you don’t at least internally have an ‘awww’ moment when Hearthstone gets his othala rune back, there is something wrong with you. That part of the story […]

Thor needs to keep track of his shit.

What a silly book. At this point I think I’ve given up expecting to see anything new from Rick Riordan, and yet I’m going to keep reading his books, so I think I shall make a vow to not talk about how repetitive they are, and how he just keeps doing the same thing over and over again with variations. After that sentence I mean. In the future I shall call this The Riordan Factor and link back to this review as an explanation. It […]

There had better be follow through here

December 15, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I am liking the Magnus Chase series so far, as much for the characters as for the humor and adventure of the story.  The biggest complaint I have about The Hammer of Thor is that there’s a little too much Loki. Loki’s a good villain, but there’s too much of his presence this time around. Watching Loki manipulate things from the background was more interesting than him begin directly involved in the villainy. I also would have liked to see a little more of Sam, but […]
