The Problems of Two Lonely People

The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by Kiran Desai

February 10, 2026 by jeverett15 2 Comments

Insert Roger Ebert’s review of North here. Seriously, there ought to be a law against writing a novel this long (nearly 700 pages) and this mediocre. Kiran Desai’s long-awaited novel made many awards shortlists and “Best of 2025” pieces, including President Obama’s, but reading it was excruciating. Of the novel’s many, many characters, none of them are likable or compelling, which is honestly kind of an achievement in its own right. Sonia and Sunny are both Indians who have gone to the United States for […]

The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by Kiran Desai

BINGO: “citizen,” as the questions of visa and citizenship and being able to stay in the US (or what to do when you can’t) occupy much of the mindspace and drives the plot. hot take prose is mostly gorgeous and compelling if overly long at times, but very rarely did I get the sense that Desai fundamentally understands the emotional arcs she’s writing about (immigrant alienation, lack of belonging, lack of place, awkwardness) or that she’s got any female friends/women she understands??? right so coming […]

Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai

September 10, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is a novel that takes place in both eastern India and the United States following the granddaughter of a regional judge in India, and a recent Indian immigrant to the US. This book ended up being a lot more interesting than I originally thought it was going to be for the first 50 pages or so. It still didn’t end moving the needle all that much above 3/5 stars for me as consequence, but I did enjoy it more as it went on. This […]

A lost empire is still lost.

In my quest to read more international Anglophone works, I sort of got sidetracked by other books from the library. So reading The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai is a way for me to get back on track a bit. It’s also the 2006 Man Booker Prize Winner, so hooray for checking another Booker title off my list! I really appreciated the themes in this novel, even if it was sometimes a bit dense or unfamiliar (but that’s a good thing, I believe). The […]
