#swordbae may be hot, but he’s not great at resolving conflict

A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole

January 2, 2019 by BookNinja 2 Comments

I really enjoyed A Princess in Theory by Alyssa Cole when I read it last year, and promptly read A Duke by Default. Rereading it over New Year crystallised a few things for me, so this is a spoiler-riffic review, with some mild criticism. Background – the story is about Portia, who applies to apprentice in Scotland to make swords, and promptly falls for Tavish, the sword craftsman. While updating the business’ website, she researches more about the area and the ancient building it is […]

“I know who killed him”

January 16, 2015 by BookNinja Leave a Comment

Tana French’s The Secret Place is based in a posh girl’s boarding school in Dublin, where a 16-year old boy from the neighbouring boys’ school was killed last year. The investigating detective (Conway) couldn’t solve the crime at the time – he was killed in the middle of the night, all swear he wasn’t dating anyone serious at the time, and there’s no evidence that the girls can get out of the building by night. This is going to be a very spoilery review – warning in advance! Kate is an incredibly work-driven but lonely woman with a slight daddy complex – she’s very conscious of his opinion. She decides to go to a golf course/resort where rich, tall Yuppies hang out, to meet her ideal guy and get married. While there, she meets Jake – who used to fit all her requirements, but has since retired from being a high-powered tax attorney, invested all his money in his brother’s […]

Bet you’ll love it..

January 1, 2015 by BookNinja 8 Comments

I had heard great things about Jennifer Crusie, but she’s not known in Ireland. Thankfully, a number of things came together to allow me to discover her – a trip to the States where I got one of her books, and a Kindle, so when I got addicted, I could read more. Bet Me is the tale of two people who didn’t realise how perfect they were for each other until a bet brought them together. Cal reluctantly takes a bet to ask out Min, […]
