Cohesive and imaginative, a marvelous collection

Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century by Kim Fu

March 12, 2023 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

This is my favorite type of short story collection. Kim Fu manages to weave together twelve stories that vary in terms of how fantastical or real they are but all work to create a cohesive collection. I found myself frequently asking “What is happening?!” while reading this collection but in the best way possible. I just need to trust the story. Things always came together. Below is a brief summary/review of each story with my individual scores. Pre-simulation Consultation XF007867 – 5/5 – Probably my […]

Privilege, trauma, survival, and sleepaway camp

The Lost Girls of Camp Forevermore by Kim Fu

April 24, 2019 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

I sunk deeply into this book from the get-go because I am myself a former camper. Growing up, I spent summer after summer at a four-week-long sleepaway camp in the Texas Hill Country and that will never not partially define me. The weird traditions, the songs, the dining hall, the counselors who maybe hung on a little too long, that all hits me right where I live. So when it came to The Lost Girls of Camp Forevermore, I honesty could have spent more time in […]

Kayla understood this as a fundamental difference between men and women: men could leave, women had to stay

The Lost Girls of Camp Forevermore by Kim Fu

This is an odd book for me because it’s actually a book that is less than the sum of its parts. So the plot here is that there is an incident at summer camp in the 1990s and four girls were involved, alongside an older camp “counselor” or more so an older woman working in the capacity as a counselor. We receive scant information about this incident in the early parts of the novel, but we are instead told that Nita “saved” them all, whatever […]

Not quite like finding your long lost twin sister

April 2, 2018 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

3.5 stars. After growing up watching The Parent Trap (both versions, but especially the Lohan version)  and wanting so badly to have that camp experience as a kid, I’m drawn to camp stories as an adult. The Lost Girls of Camp Forevermore tells the story of a camp experience that goes very badly and then revisits each character in their adult lives to see where they’ve ended up and how that experience affected each of them. Their experience together was truly traumatic and yet, Fu […]
