Scorpions' Dance: The President, The Spymaster, and Watergate by Jefferson Morley

August 30, 2024 by Jake Leave a Comment

Hmmm. This is tough. I was loving the first part of this book. It was maybe my favorite non-fiction read of the year. It almost read like a thriller. It traces the early political careers of Dick Helms and Richard Nixon respectively, along with the trajectory that would lead them to Watergate and the close of their careers. Then it got to the Kennedy stuff. And I realized Jefferson Morley is a Kennedy conspiracy theorist. Not a hardcore one. He doesn’t seem to believe anything […]

Now She’s Just Somebody

A Woman I Know by Mary Haverstick

August 12, 2024 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR16 Bingo: celestial. Admittedly, this is a stretch but my rationale is that Jerrie Cobb participated in a women’s flying program in which they SHOULD HAVE been the first American women in space but were denied because…well, because they were women. So the celestial tag is a nod to their hard work and dedication, despite the sexism they faced. I’ve read plenty of books on the Kennedy assassination, fiction and otherwise. This is a different take. It started out really well. […]

Present Tense, Past Perfect

11.22.63 by Stephen King

February 23, 2024 by Zirza Leave a Comment

It’s 2011, and Jake Epping is a high school English teacher in a sleepy Maryland town when his friend Al, who runs an implausibly cheap diner on the edge of town, asks him for a big favour: go back in time and stop the Kennedy assassination. You see, Al’s diner has a somewhat unusual feature in its storeroom: a portal back to 1958. After a few furtive explorations, Jake agrees to go down the rabbit hole, find Lee Harvey Oswald, and stop him before he […]

Road Trip!

November Road by Lou Berney

August 14, 2019 by Jake 4 Comments

I’ve just about had my fill of fiction books devoted to the Kennedy assassination. Yet since I needed to read a novel involving a family road trip for my local library’s bingo, I took this on. Lou Berney is one of those writers I should like more than I do. He writes fun, detailed crime novels that are well-paced and hold my attention. But I couldn’t even get through half of The Long and Faraway Gone. I was curious as to why. Reading the slimmer November Road provided me […]
