The books, "The History of the World Begins in Ice", "Cold Magic", "Cold Fire", and "Cold Steel" by Kate Elliott arranged on a bookshelf.

Prolonging my time in the Cold Magic world with short stories and essays

The World Begins in Ice by Kate Elliott

January 6, 2026 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

I first learned about Kate Elliott’s Cold Magic series while reading John Scalzi’s website.  In the Big Idea section Elliott described what The History of the World Begins in Ice is all about.  It is a collection of short stories written in the “Spiritwalker Trilogy” as well as essays about the characters and aspects of the world.  The trilogy sounded fascinating, to quote Kate: When I began writing Cold Magic, my primary goal (besides making it shorter than Traitors’ Gate) was to tell a story that would […]

Cold Steel by Kate Elliott

This review is for emmalita.  I haven’t been writing reviews in months due to life reasons but I wanted to share with her how awesome I found this trilogy.  Instead of writing her a bunch of texts, I decided it was time to write a review.  Emmalita introduced me to Kate Elliott with The Keeper’s Six.  Earlier this year I devoured Elliott’s’ The Witch Roads and it got me wanting to explore her back catalog so I got the audiobook version of Cold Magic, book one […]

A little light on answers for my preferences

The Witch Roads by Kate Elliott

November 12, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This wasn’t quite the novel I was expecting – there isn’t anything inaccurate about the novel’s description but I was expecting a fun, fast paced fantasy/adventure novel and instead got more of dense road trip novel that was so slow paced it would almost be cozy if not for the dark subject matter. Elen is a courier in a sleepy town at the edge of the empire. Elen and her recently deceased sister Aoving settled there over a decade ago, along with Aoving’s son Kem, […]

Hic sunt dracones

The Keeper's Six by Kate Elliott

July 20, 2025 by NatalieH 7 Comments

CBR Bingo: Rec’d (this recommendation actually comes courtesy of Emmalita, when I asked for recommendations for more fantasy books with main characters that are older women). I’ve read a couple of Kate Elliott’s books before, but not very recently. Before picking up The Keeper’s Six, I’d sort of forgotten about her work. I remember enjoying her previous books, but nothing much actually about their contents. This is a pretty short novel, that follows Esther, a 60-ish-year-old. Early one morning, she receives a brief, fearful phone call […]

Happy International Women’s Day to Esther Green

The Keeper's Six by Kate Elliott

March 8, 2024 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

First of all, Thank you, Emmalita, for The Keeper’s Six!  I’ve been rather bad about writing reviews but I want to share how awesome Esther Green is on International Women’s Day.  Esther is a badass, an adventurer, intelligent, determined, Jewish, a mother, a widower, a magical caster called a Lantern, is over 60 years old and still going on fantastical missions!  That’s the type of 60 year old that I hope to be. Esther Green is woken in the middle of night with an urgent call […]

A Science Fiction-ish Fantasy with Dragons to Start Your New Year

The Keeper's Six by Kate Elliott

December 19, 2022 by Emmalita 3 Comments

I enjoyed The Keeper’s Six so much. I’ve been wanting to dive into Kate Elliott, and The Keeper’s Six, a stand-alone short novel seemed perfect. First of all, the protagonist in this book is a woman older than I am. It is very rare to see a 60-year old woman as a kick ass protagonist when she isn’t also immortal. Esther is a grandmother. Secondly, this book has dragons. A dragon is the antagonist. Thirdly, this book is quite Jewish, which is refreshing. I’m hoping […]

Interesting. I could not fathom writing about the same characters in the same way for that long.
