The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen

CBRBINGO – IN THE WILD: “‘You can’t just not do things acause of the consequences.’ ‘Consequences are literally the reason not to do things. That’s what they’re *for*.”

The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen (The Doomsday Books, #1) by K.J. Charles

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Books 15/30 I feel like this is one of those books I will re-read and then instantly bump up to five stars, but for now I’m leaving it at 4.5 rounded down because those are just my feelings right now. Despite the subject matter (smuggling! hiding things in swamps! thievery! treason! murder! leaving people to drown! worse things I don’t feel comfortable putting an exclamation mark after!), the relationship between our two main characters, Sir Gareth Inglis and […]

And here he was now in his own bookshop, well fed, usefully busy, and enjoyably partnered. It made the violent assault and threat of torture seem quite worthwhile.” ― K.J. Charles, Slippery Creatures Will Darling has returned from serving in World War 1 and is starting to get back on his feet. After being unable to find employment upon returning to London, he is taken in by his estranged uncle, who runs a massive bookshop. When his uncle passes away from a stroke, Will takes […]

Think about that, you blasted apocalypse, and be aware that when it’s my turn, I’m going to make you know my rights.

A Nobleman’s Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel by K.J. Charles

September 19, 2023 by Emmalita 3 Comments

I loved A Nobleman’s Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel. It is a sequel to The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen, set several years later. In Secret Lives, Luke Doomsday is an adolescent, the abused and neglected nephew of Joss, whom Gareth saves. In Nobleman’s Guide, Luke is an adult, educated and working professionally as a secretary. Major Rufus d’Aumesty has unexpectedly (to the rest of the d’Aumesty family) inherited the title of Earl of Oxney. After a year of defending his inheritance from his uncle, Rufus is trying to […]

A Case of Possession by K.J. Charles

Flight of Magpies by K.J. Charles

You’re a fool, and I’m another. Between us, we barely make a village idiot. ― K.J. Charles, A Case of Possession I see. Things must be bad if you’re voluntarily telling me the truth. ― K.J. Charles, Flight of Magpies “Are you in this conversation, or just skulking?” “Mostly skulking.” Stephen had a particular knack for making himself unobtrusive. He was mildly impressed that he’d been noticed. “But I have a licence to skulk.” ― K.J. Charles, Flight of Magpies CBR15Bingo: Queer Lives square and […]

“I said, could I f*ck you, and you said, yes please, and I thought, there’s manners. Proper breeding, that is.”

The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen by K.J. Charles

Sometimes I’ll get a book that I know I’m going to like a lot and I’m reluctant to read it because then it will have been read. I got my e-arc quite some time ago and was resistant to reading it for weeks. And then I finally opened it yesterday and read with brief breaks for sleep and food. I knew I would love it, I’m so glad I finally read it, and now I’m jealous of everyone who gets to read it for the […]

“I’m tired of being the villain in the story. I never meant to be, and I don’t want to do it any more.”

Jackdaw by K.J. Charles

My favorite of the Magpie books. I was surprised by this! The premise turned me off a little, which is why it took me so long to pick up. I’m not really a fan of “redeeming the bad guy” stories, but of course Charles pulls it off. And, as it turns out, Jonah wasn’t really a bad guy for what he did in the original trilogy. He was being coerced, very strongly. Our narrator isn’t Jonah Pastern, though, it’s ex-policeman Ben Spenser, who was left […]
