Darling it’s better down where it’s wetter.

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne

February 14, 2021 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

I listened to this book via the podcast Phoebe Reads a Mystery which is voiced by Phoebe Judge of the famed Criminal Podcast. She reads one to two chapters a day of a classic mystery (though I’m not sure if this most recent selection qualifies). This book follows a reluctant passenger aboard the Nautilus, a submarine which must have seemed truly fantastical the time of the book’s 1869 publication, and it’s secretive Captain Nemo. French oceanographer Pierre Aronnax has, along with his faithful servant […]

Phileas Fogg is the most interesting man in the world

Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne

July 12, 2019 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr11bingo Travel This classic 1873 novel by Jules Verne was an utter delight! I am somewhat ashamed to admit that this is the first Jules Verne novel I’ve read and that I really knew nothing at all about it when I picked it up. Turns out, that worked to my advantage, as I was on the edge of my seat, eagerly turning each page to see whether Phileas Fogg would win his wager to travel around the world in 80 days. This book is part […]

Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne

Jules Verne occupies a few disparate corners of my imagination, and since I am reading and reviewing two of this novels here, I will share them. First, I read pretty much every edition of “Great Illustrated Classics” that I could as a kid. I would like to go on some kind of fake affected rant about how they opened up doors to me, but really I used them for Book It and Accelerated Reader to earn points with my friends. I think ultimately they proved […]

Abundantly tedious

Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne

September 10, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

This was a book I 100% only read because of bingo. I’m not sure it would have crossed my radar to read otherwise, what with the plethora of material out there. So there’s that. If you’re tempted to go for it, let me from the get-go recommend the audio book. It’s read by Tim Curry, y’all. That’s right. Dr. Frankenfurter, Long John Silver, is there narrating your Jules Verne. It’s wonderful. And it’s perfect for some 1.25x speed. When I went to look for an […]

The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells

September 7, 2016 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

The inimitable H.G. Wells, from 1895-98, wrote The Time Machine, The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Invisible Man, and War of the Worlds. That’s an unbelievable concentration of brilliance that I can’t find in another writer. Someone like Stephen King has written numerous works that will (or have already) become classics of their genre, but they’re spread out over a career (for instance, 1978’s The Stand followed hot on the heels of 1977’s The Shining, but Misery came out in 1987 and The Green Mile […]
