Cupcakes, Some False Advertising, and A Heap of Nonsense

February 20, 2016 by maydays 11 Comments

I’m new to CBR this year, and you all seem to really like your romances.  Outside of the classics and a few mainstreams, I have yet to get the genre to really speak to me.  I’m pretty pragmatic by nature, so I’m not easily swept away.  My dislike for romance makes me feel like there’s something wrong with me, not that there’s something wrong with romances.  So I try and try again. So, here we are.  Again.  Someone (I’m sorry I can’t remember who), mentioned […]

The road to Hell may be paved with good intentions, but the best exit to take to get there is in New Jersey

Unlike the previous anthology I read, this is a book with a certain thematic idea by different authors, rather than a collection of work by one author. So if you like (or don’t like) the author of one story, just move on to the next and see where it takes you. The book is separated in two parts with three sections each. Trafficking in Magic involves Distribution, Services, and Point of Sale, while Magicking in Traffic is divided into Directing Traffic, Bad Roads, and Changing […]

A surprise book published without any fanfare whatsoever, because Brandon Sanderson is the Beyoncé of epic fantasy.

February 18, 2016 by narfna Leave a Comment

Brandon Sanderson is ridiculous. He’s all, here’s a surprise novella, and no big deal, the entire thing is made up of such game-changing ridiculous nonsense, you won’t even think it’s real as you’re reading it! You know, just been writing it since 2004 and stuff. It only gives you the most information on the Cosmere that has been released yet. It only changes a shit ton of stuff we assumed about the original trilogy and the Wax and Wayne books. NBD. Make no mistake here. […]

Guys. GUYS. GUYYYYYSSS.

Don’t you just love when you find a story that clicks with you on every level? And it’s not like it’s a perfect story, or even all that objectively amazing, but it’s the perfect story for you? That’s totally this series for me. I loved the Mistborn books, and I SUPER LOVE the Stormlight Archive books (still my favorite thing Sanderson has written, and I’ve now read nearly all of his massive and steadily growing output), but these Mistborn Alloy Era/Wax and Wayne books have […]

Bad Harry Potter goes to Narnia Hell Makes for Creepy Dirty Bad Reading

February 14, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader 8 Comments

I was intrigued by the first third of The Magicians, hated the second third, and the final third was weird and I’m not sure it was enough to redeem the book from the middle part. The first part is dark Harry Potter, the second is existential and dirty in a creepy-bad way, and the last is Narnia gone to hell. Overall, The Magicians reminded me of The Secret History (which I liked parts of but overall didn’t like for many of the same reasons I […]

I’m super digging this series.

So you know how you’re reading one book and you think you know all about it and then BAM IT’S ANOTHER BOOK AND WHAT IS HAPPENING EVEN? And then you’re like, ohhhhh shiiiiiit. This book. This one right here. Honestly, I should know better by now. After I finish up Bands of Mourning, I’m sure in rather short order, the only books of Brandon Sanderson’s I won’t have read will be the Alcatraz books. I’m used to his tricks. And still. I thought I had this […]

I really enjoyed this one. I was particularly amused at Lady Catherine deBoutgh’s disgust at her assassin’s incompetence.
