Re-reading Mistborn, Part Five

Shadows of Self (Mistborn, #5) by Brandon Sanderson

December 8, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

Still love this. Neat to see the pieces set up beforehand. I will be honest with you. I do not want to write this review. Sometimes you just don’t want to make thoughts about the things you love. But I have to write this review, at least 250 words, because of made up commitments that I could totally ignore if I really wanted to (hello, CBR, I cross-posted this to Goodreads!), but instead hold myself to anyway, because apparently doing that is something my subconscious […]

Happiness is a warm gun

The last time I reviewed a Brandon Sanderson book, I complained of Sanderson fatigue, the review got featured, and several more people complained about it with me. So it is a bit sheepishly that I confess I not only went back to him but that I read the entire second Mistborn series minus the one book that hasn’t been published yet. And I enjoyed them immensely. In fact, for someone like me who still had fond memories of earlier Cosmere experiences, The Alloy of Law, […]

Probably Don’t Start with book 5 in this series

Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson

Who am I kidding? If you read the first four Mistborn novels, you’re likely going to read this one. If you didn’t, well, I don’t know what to tell you.   It’s not that Brandon Sanderson novels are without teeth, but he’s almost goofily squeamish about sex and sexuality. They tend to have some interesting ideas about religion and faith, have good action, a reliably interesting and intricate magic/abilities systems, and he’s good at embedding genre fiction into his genre fiction. His political writing is […]

Spectacles. They were kind of like a hat for smart people

February 26, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

Readers should probably have read The Alloy of Law before beginning this book. It sets up these characters and the world and time they inhabit really well. I shall try to refrain from spoiling said book too much, but if you haven’t read it, that’s where you want to start. Well, to be really accurate, you should probably start with Mistborn: the Final Empire, the first book in the trilogy that establishes the whole of this world, but that’s more for those who want a […]

I’m super digging this series.

So you know how you’re reading one book and you think you know all about it and then BAM IT’S ANOTHER BOOK AND WHAT IS HAPPENING EVEN? And then you’re like, ohhhhh shiiiiiit. This book. This one right here. Honestly, I should know better by now. After I finish up Bands of Mourning, I’m sure in rather short order, the only books of Brandon Sanderson’s I won’t have read will be the Alcatraz books. I’m used to his tricks. And still. I thought I had this […]
