I wish I would have written this review right after I finished the book. (I should get that printed on a t-shirt.) I finished it a couple of months ago now, and as always seems to happen to me when I do this, I put off writing the review in the (vain) hopes that time will make me smarter (or something?) and words will magically appear in the review space. This never happens. Instead, I am left trying to remember what happened in the book and […]
One to Bind Them All
Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien (1988) – There are several books on my shelves that I must reread every couple years because I miss them. The Lord of the Rings is one of them (along with Dune, Harry Potter, and the Modesty Blaise books). I guess I originally read it in the seventies and have reread it consistently through the years. Although I’ll try not to compare the book with the movie, after you’ve seen Viggo and Elijah as Aragorn and Frodo, it’s […]
Creeping Dread Coated with a Veneer of Bigotry
My introduction to the works of H.P. Lovecraft was most likely the film Reanimator, though I don’t know if I realized the source at the time. I was interested in reading these stories because Lovecraftian mythos is has been the source of so much pop culture that I’ve imbibed – movies, books, video games – Lovecraft has either provided a source for other storytellers to embellish (as in the case of Reanimator) or has inspired all new horrors (like the xenomorph in Alien). Chances are […]
Still just a book in this series.
It turns out I didn’t remember most of this book, and I think that’s because, well, it’s not really that memorable? Unfortunately this has turned out to be the one book in the series so far that I haven’t liked more on re-read. In fact, I may have liked it a little less, what with not listening to the audio this time around, and it feeling sort of sloggy. It’s not that what’s here is bad, just, I don’t know . . . not super […]
This series continues to be fun but not perfect.
Cliffhanger nooooooooo. Except I really can’t complain, because 1) I have the next book sitting on my nightstand and I can pick it up whenever I want (which will be after I finish the next two books on my TBR); and 2) It was a really well done cliffhanger! Just the right amount of “I need to find out what will happen next” and “I’m pretty sure I know what’s coming next and it’s going to be great.” I’ve seen several people note in their […]
More Pink, Please
So, this was a re-read of this series for me and I have to say that I loved it as much this time as I did the first time around. Pierce Brown created an absolutely fascinating world for this series, and he did so beautifully. The books center on Darrow, a “Red” who works in the mines below the surface of Mars. The Reds are mining a material that will allow Mars to be terraformed so that humans can successfully colonize it. It is important work […]
