Only two more (and a side-novel) until Sanderson!

February 8, 2018 by narfna 2 Comments

How many more ways can I find to say the same things about this series? A series whose problems I identified as early as book three, and which has continued to embrace those problems rather than fix them. Presumably because Jordan didn’t see them as problems but rather as features. Which is one of the problems. It’s a whole problematical circle of problems, and ouroboroses eating their tails and such (a fitting image since the Wheel of Time is basically an ouroboros sailing some sort […]

That’s nothing like the book! And deeper lessons learned on re-reading decades later

February 8, 2018 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

When I found out Disney was adapting A Wrinkle in Time, I knew that I would read it to my daughter before the movie came out.  We recently watched the trailer but hadn’t finished the book yet.  Once the trailer finished, my daughter turned to me and said, “That’s nothing like the book!”  I started laughing and responded, “Get used to that feeling, kiddo”.  Later we talked about the challenge of adapting a written work to a visual medium and we both speculated on how Aunt Beast will […]

Wish this hadn’t sat in my TBR so long

Me to my husband, “I think you’ll really like this book I’ve just started reading, The Queen of Blood.  There are these elemental spirits and they are locked in conflict with the humans.  In this kingdom, the people live in the trees.  A small village might be just one giant tree – “.  He interrupts me, “Do they get around on zip lines?” “Yeah”, I respond.  “I read that last year, good book”.  He was right, it is a good book. Renthia is made of […]

It sounded scary at first

February 3, 2018 by llp 5 Comments

I had only heard of Brandon Sanderson a few times prior to fall 2017, mostly in relation to his having finished the Wheel of Time series. I never paid very much attention to him, because I haven’t read that series and I kind of felt like I have had enough of white Mormon men and their novels for one lifetime (O.S.C. – I’m looking at you, FOREVER). However, when friends whose taste in books I trust started to get excited about the third in Sanderson’s […]

The Right Words Can Change the World

February 1, 2018 by janetfaust 2 Comments

This book is about taking the broken pieces of yourself and arranging them into something resembling a thinking and feeling person again. It’s about facing your deepest, most painful secrets and being able to exist with them and because of them. It’s about owning and honoring all the parts of you that scare you; whether those parts are wretched or wonderful. And it’s also about people with magical abilities who can defy gravity, change their appearance, heal instantly and fight with long, magical swords. Brandon […]

What if, what if, what if

January 28, 2018 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

When I found out a new Kristin Cashore book was coming out I was REALLY excited. When I found out it wasn’t a new book in the Graceling series, I was a little less excited, but cautiously optimistic. It wasn’t something I’d pre-order, but it was something I’d get on the library hold list for. I was super curious what direction this book would take and if I’d like it as much as the Graceling books. Luckily, I can say that I really enjoyed Jane, […]
