I Guess I Just Wanted the Forest to be Darker

May 28, 2015 by Melina Leave a Comment

Hazel and her brother Ben live a small town that edges up against the land of the fairies. As children  they were the best of friends, often going off on dangerous adventures in the woods together taking down monsters in a badass brother/sister duo where the brother is the musician who stuns the wild creatures and Hazel, who is the knight who slays the beasts.  But even as children, Ben realizes the danger the two of them are in and wants to quit before they […]

Beware the Evil that Lives in the Wood…

May 27, 2015 by HillaryM Leave a Comment

All her life, Agnieszka has known two things: that she must stay away from the Wood at all costs, and that every ten years, the Dragon emerges from his tower to select a girl to serve him for the next ten years. (He’s not the fire-breathing sort of dragon, but rather the wizard tasked with protecting their valley.) She knows all too well the horrors inflicted when the Wood claims a victim, but she’s not terribly concerned about the Dragon. After all, everyone has known all […]

Frogs, Ducks, Turtles, Rabbits, and How Things Got the Way They Are

May 26, 2015 by sabian30 Leave a Comment

Spark – A Creative Anthology, Edited by Brian Lewis (2015) – I usually make it a rule not to critique an anthology that contains a story I’ve written, but this collection of short stories is so good, I couldn’t resist. I won’t mention the story I wrote (except perhaps to say how much I appreciate being included with these tales) or the poetry (which is a foreign language to me). I will, however, list the stories and tell you a little about them. The Frog […]

You, too, can speak the name of the wind. JK. Only the specially chosen can do that.

May 25, 2015 by tillie 3 Comments

I am in love with The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I cannot be snarky about this one. I have fallen in love completely and it has left me blind to the faults of this novel. I want to speak the name of the wind, I want to find the dragons and I want to go in search of the Chandrian. But I don’t want to do it with Kvothe. Kvothe is the “Hero” of the story. We first meet him, quietly sweeping his inn as […]

Preteen angst, extra special snowflake edition.

May 20, 2015 by llp 5 Comments

I have been reading an awful lot of YA fiction lately – partly out of interest, and partly out of reading to my son. I figure I better read to him while he is willing to listen, and Santa brought him the Percy Jackson box set for Christmas. I have recently lost him at story time to his father and Harry Potter, and I confess I am tempted to read ahead and see where the book series goes. I can only be patient for so […]

“Beauty is the truth revealed through our eyes, and nothing more.”

May 19, 2015 by crystalclear 2 Comments

Guys. You guuuuuys. This is… I mean… the… *insert unintelligible noises*… awesome.  The awesomeness that is contained in these pages.  This book makes me want to grab a child and read it to them.  This book is like The Princess Bride, both in awesomeness and in that it is a story being told to children.  I suppose also in that there is a princess who does not begin as a princess.  But like The Princess Bride, it is also a timeless tale that can be […]
