Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Wendy, Darling by A.C. Wise

Cat Chaser by Elmore Leonard

April 18, 2022 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

I’m starting to get behind so I’m going with the group review format. I didn’t know how to do this until now so I’m hoping this saves my season when my laziness/procrastination (fine, its mostly because of Elden Ring) prevents me from getting my reviews written. These are three books that are very different in genre, but all quite good and recommended.   Malibu catches fire. It is simply what Malibu does from time to time. Tornadoes take the flatlands of the Midwest. Floods rise […]

Cat Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Cat Chaser by Elmore Leonard

April 4, 2022 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Elmore Leonard is known for his convoluted crime plots and his memorable characters, with a special emphasis on the bad guys, whom he imbues with actual personalities as opposed to goals and desires. Leonard is the only author I’ve read whose villains seem like they might go to the movies or have a favorite drink, for example. In Cat Chaser, Leonard’s gift for creating realistically complicated situations in which human failings and foibles lead to plans going awry and poor decisions being made is as […]

Motor City Showdown

City Primeval by Elmore Leonard

March 23, 2021 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Justified is one of my favorite TV shows of all-time, so when I read recently that the producers of that show are in talks to bring the character of Raylan Givens back in a new series, I quickly snapped up the book in question. At first, City Primeval seems like odd choice, since Raylan does not appear in it, but TV writers are clever and I’m sure they’ll figure something out. Otherwise, the novel is Leonard in top form and thus perfect fodder for television. […]

Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card

Dakota by Kathleen Norris

Out of Sight by Elmore Leonard

Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart

December 15, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Speaker for the Dead – 4/5 Stars This is the direct sequel to Ender’s Game, in that it’s an Ender book, doesn’t stay on Earth with Bean and Peter like other later books, and is the book that Card wrote right after Ender’s Game. It’s also one of those books I skipped for the longest time. I read the first book in high school 25 years ago and have read all the Ender’s Shadow books at least once. I think when I read the premise of this book I […]

Robber Barons

Swag by Elmore Leonard

May 16, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

Despite being a longtime Elmore Leonard fan, Swag is about the only well-regarded book of his I have yet to read. And I don’t know why I put it off for so long. I made excuse-after-excuse because there was always something else to read. But when I saw it at a used book store (bless them), I figured it was time to get to it. And thanks to this pandemic (sarcasm), I decided to knock it out. Yeah, there was no reason to wait. This book was […]

This is a Stick-Up

Swag by Elmore Leonard

August 28, 2019 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Swag is classic Elmore Leonard. Criminals who think they’re smarter than they actually are, heists that are too complex for their own good, double-crosses motivated by greed and mistrust, and crisp pose packed with crackling dialogue. When used-car salesman Frank Ryan catches Ernest “Stick” Stickley trying to drive off the lot with a stolen car, he decides to see it as an opportunity. Refusing to identify Stick in court, Ryan approaches him with a business proposition. He wants the two of them to join up […]
