Wait, what do you mean I have to wait for the next one?!?

December 10, 2017 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

The third book in the series, we get more information and insight from our semi-adventurers, as well as from some new characters.  Newly added to our cast is Elora, an experienced Rogue, along with a priest of Grumble and Silas, a clerk in the Hall of Adventurers.   While the majority of the story stays with our main group, we do see what is going on with the others as well.   There are some heavy themes in this story, and some heavy consequences.  We delve […]

The review I forgot to write

December 10, 2017 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

I feel kind of bad that I’m not doing justice to this book in this review, purely because I read it in July and I’m trying to write the review in December.  I wrote the reviews of the first and third books close to when I finished them, but this one slipped by. I think I was in a rush to get to the next one, or something.  Oops. After escaping their home kingdom, our group of Adventurers moves on in search of, well, something. […]

This one was my gateway drug

December 10, 2017 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

This was the first Drew Hayes book I read (well, listened to) and it’s the one that got me hooked.  Honestly, going in I didn’t have very high expectations.  I just scrolled through my library options and tried to pick something that wouldn’t waste my time, and even if it did, I could move on.  I was pleasantly surprised!  I don’t play D&D (Dungeons & Dragons for the less nerdy), but I do have passing knowledge of some of the elements.  Not having that base […]

Summer Reading concerning an Accountant of the Vampire Variety

July 22, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I saw this book in an airport bookstore a few years ago, added it to my Goodreads, and forgot about it. I recently found a novel I really enjoyed was by the same author, and was reminded of this one. Since I had an extended travel period coming up, I figured this would be a perfect thing to bring with me. I was right. Fred is a vampire who is also an accountant. He was your typical nerd in life, and finds that not much […]

If Mr Incredible were a bad guy in a past life

June 24, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Imagine a world that combines elements of The Incredibles, Discworld, and Marvel. That’s what you get in Forging Hephaestus (Villains’ Code Book 1). I really enjoyed this combination, and I really, really hope the series continues for at least a few more volumes. The basic premise is that the world contains meta-humans, those with special powers, and such people often become either heroes and join the Alliance of Heroic Champions, or a villain who joins the guild of villains.  The organization and bureaucratization of crime […]

Working 5 to 9

April 25, 2017 by J Leave a Comment

Once again, I’m reviewing a sequel book in a series without having covered the first book. Some of the review will be very lightly spoiler-ish. The central conceit of the series: Fred Fletcher lived a quiet, boring life as an accountant. He liked this life. Then he died. (Hot tip: nothing good can happen at your high school reunion.) Fred did what any of us would do after becoming a vampire: made his day job his night job.  Only the clients look a lot different now than […]

I felt the same way. Interesting concept, but the execution was lacking.

on Sometimes, a book cover promises cats and lies. This book, on the other hand, delivers in spades. SO many cats, guys.
