Don’t read the end of this book at work… I don’t know how many times I’ve cried at work from books!!

October 12, 2016 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

I could not put this book down! I read it over 3 days, and unfortunately I had to work those days, or it would’ve been 1 day! A friend from work knows I love to read. She also knows I read Gone Girl, and that I liked it. Gone Girl is actually mentioned on the front cover of this book. To me, the only similarities between Reconstructing Amelia and Gone Girl is that the stories are told by two different people, and there’s a mysterious […]

Can’t believe I almost skipped this one

September 25, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

This book really surprised me. I loved The Likeness, but detective Frank Mackey was NOT a favorite character. I really considered skipping this one and moving on to book four of the series. I’m so glad I resisted temptation because Faithful Place ended up being my favorite so far. As with all her novels (at least the ones I’ve read!), French is just as interested in the characters and how they cope with events as she is in the mystery itself. Frank grew up poor […]

A Beautiful Debut

August 15, 2016 by KM Bezner Leave a Comment

This is a slow, quiet novel that captures readers at the start with its intensity. The stakes are high for everyone, even before we discover the tragedy that has befallen Kyung’s family. In the beginning, Kyung is already faced with the necessity of swallowing his pride and moving back in with his parents. But when Kyung’s mother shows up in his backyard, beaten and battered, Kyung knows who is to blame before the accusatory words escape her mouth. He suspects that his father, who has […]

Stephanie Plum: no character development since 2005

August 4, 2016 by Jak Leave a Comment

More years ago than I care to recall, I picked up a book called Four to Score from my local library. It had a vaguely competent heroine called Stephanie Plum, a hot guy from her past, crime, humour, euphemisms for sex, all that good stuff. Since then, I have felt compelled to read everything ever written by Janet Evanovich. I used to buy everything, but stopped a few years ago, for which reason the following review will make clear. I recently moved and joined my new local […]

The worst road trip since Crossroads

June 9, 2016 by expandingbookshelf Leave a Comment

We all know the story. Boy meets girl, boy falls for girl based on no discernible criteria, girl isn’t interested, boy knocks girl out, stuffs her in a suitcase and holds her captive on a deranged road trip. Teo Alevar lives in Rio de Janiero with his disabled mother and her dog. A med student, his best and only friend is a cadaver named Gertrude. He’s not interested in other people, and doesn’t think he’s capable of love until he meets Clarice. And thus begins […]

What is the Meaning of Innocence

June 8, 2016 by Andrea Krieter Leave a Comment

Rating: 4.0/5 Summary: Sixteen year old Steve Harmon is on trial for murder. The book explores his trial as well his own personal diary of what he goes through in jail. Throughout the book, Steve struggles with proving his innocence: not only to himself, but to the jury, his attorney and his family.
