More From The “Books Exposing Violent Sexism” YA Subgenre

Sadie by Courtney Summers

April 5, 2019 by MrsLangdonAlger 3 Comments

Apparently I’ve discovered my favorite young adult subgenre, and it’s “angry books about what our crappy society does to girls”. In the last year all my favorite YA books books have fit into this wheelhouse. I don’t read a lot of young adult novels at all anymore, but when I find books that look like they might be similar to I Stop Somewhere, The Nowhere Girls, or Sawkill Girls, I always pick them up. This one didn’t disappoint. The book follows Sadie, who is out […]

Tell Me Everything by Sarah Enni

Last week, The Fug Girls had a book contest up on their site, and the book looked familiar to me. I almost always love the books that they recommend, so I wracked my brain trying to think of how I recognized this one…and then realized it was in my box of new releases for teen readers from work. I’m of two minds on this one. I get that I am not the demographic for this. There is a world of difference between YA fiction and […]

Sadie by Courtney Summers

A few weeks ago, I had a chance to go and see Cannonball favorite Karen McManus talking about her new book, Two Can Keep a Secret, along with another YA author I hadn’t previously heard of, Megan Miranda. I asked them a few questions during the panel, including wondering what they — as writers of suspenseful YA fiction — liked to read, and were currently reading. They both, without hesitation, told me to read Sadie by Courtney Summers, right away. So, I did. I knew […]

This would make a good book club read

Sadie by Courtney Summers

3.5 stars. A very interesting read, both from a story standpoint and a writing standpoint. It didn’t totally work for me on every level, but I’m not sorry I read it and I would recommend it. DO NOT do the audiobook if you’re a frequent podcast listener. The actors they got for the audio version are trying their hardest, they really are. However, the production and delivery weren’t at all like real podcasts so it was hard to stay inside the world of the book. […]

Living in a Serial World (CBR10 BINGO)

October 25, 2018 by ASKReviews 1 Comment

CBR 10 BINGO Square: Not My Wheelhouse Best for: Anyone who listens to long-form storytelling podcasts; anyone who appreciates good storytelling; anyone who can stomach a book with some really disturbing parts. In a nutshell: Nineteen-year-old Sadie has gone missing, and its possible that it has something to do with the recent death of her 13-year-old sister. Her surrogate grandmother contacts an NPR-type radio station to see if one of their journalists can help find Sadie. (Ignore the tag-line on the cover though — it […]
