Day Five was the most emotional part for me…not sure I will ever truly get over that one.

Eight Days: A Story of Haiti by Edwidge Danticat

October 25, 2019 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

With the picture book, Eight Days: A Story of Haiti they created a beautiful and sad story about a young boy trapped for over a week after the earthquake of Haiti a few years ago. However, this came out soon after the actual event, so it was timely. Now, one might have to explain the actual event, but sadly, we still have natural disasters, and this could be used to talk about them as well. Based […]

Courage!

June 26, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Brave Enough for Two (a Hoot and Olive book) has allusions to Winnie the Pooh. It is a soft, classically toned story written and illustrated by Jonathan D. Voss. But you now must read “I’m a Duck” by Eve Bunting and illustrated by Will Hillenbrand.  And even if you do not quack along, you will be rooting for the little duck in this story. One day, an egg rolled out of the nest and into a deep pond. This caused the egg, now […]

Dream the impossible, make it possible

January 8, 2017 by ChainedVase 1 Comment

I come from a large family of bookish people, so when we gather for Xmas, we exchange books for all the small ones. My older Squishie is fascinated by Space, so this book was an obvious choice for him. It’s a wonderful, inspirational book about facing your fears and living your dreams. –Side note: there is no Jakku in this book. Older Squishie is constantly looking for info about Jakku in his Space books and is convinced that maybe I’m just not that good at […]
