cover of The Heiress Effect by Courtney Milan

“When you keep quiet, people fill in their own most intelligent thoughts on your behalf.”

October 29, 2014 by faintingviolet 5 Comments

What happens when you aren’t built for the life you’re in? In The Heiress Effect Courtney Milan takes us along with her characters to find out. I know that’s not the tagline that many would use to convey the point of this historical romance set in 1860s England. There is all the rich historic detail that infuses Milan’s other works in the Brothers Sinister series (and man do I love reading her Afterwords going over those details), we have Oliver Marshall’s quest for Parliament and […]

You can never go wrong with puppy cannons.

When school started in September, I told myself that now that I had a little bit of free time, I was going to catch up on several things that the Cannonball community had recommended: 1. Watching the Lizzie Bennet Diaries on YouTube. 2. Reading a few books by Courtney Milan. There were simply too many 5-star reviews for me to ignore. This was a bandwagon that I needed to get on! 3. Attempt to read at least one of the Outlander books. Well, the kids have […]

A Book I Couldn’t Wait to Review (So I Didn’t)

August 30, 2014 by faintingviolet 6 Comments

I’m writing this review without actually finishing the book. I know, it’s unorthodox, but stick with me here. Thanks to the lovely reviews of Courtney Milan’s Brothers Sinister series I have decided to make these books my summer/fall romance reads. Based solely on the reviews I purchased all of the available books and novellas for my Nook and have been sliding these books in amongst my other reading. The Duchess War is the first full novel, second story, in the series and I am in […]

“I am done with things happening to me. From here on out, I am going to happen to things.”

July 31, 2014 by faintingviolet 8 Comments

After I finished reading Me Before You I was an emotional wreck. My roommate has taken to calling it the book that broke me, as in “Oh, did you write your review of the book that broke you?” Finally, yes. But in the meantime between reading the book and writing the review I needed something else to read, something to clear my poor brain space and think some happy thoughts. So, I grabbed my Nook and started reading Courtney Milan’s The Governess Affair, the prequel […]

Cover of The Suffragette Scandal by Courtney Milan

Huzzah! Suffragettes!

July 22, 2014 by HillaryM 5 Comments

Courtney Milan has done it again, and this may actually be my favorite book yet by her. Plenty of romance novels have funny moments, but it’s rare that I actually have to set a book down because I’m laughing so hard there are tears streaming down my face. If you’ve spent any time on ladyblogs, you’ll love it too.

Just go buy it and read it. That’s all the review you need.

July 16, 2014 by Emmalita 12 Comments

There’s no need to read my review. Just click on the link and go buy the book.  You will not be sorry. Expectations – mine and the characters: My expectations for this book were high. I was afraid they were unrealistically high. I did my best to check my expectations so that I can just enjoy the story, but I need not have worried. Milan took my expectations, subverted them, and then schooled me on what my expectations should have been.  I don’t feel bad, […]
