Sticking It to Cancer One Book at a Time

Left wanting more… (and hooray – this completes two bingo lines!)

The Eye of the Heron by Ursula K Le Guin

CBR11 Bingo- Birthday   I had to find a square for my girl Le Guin on this bingo card, and fortunately her birthday was October 21, so that was an easy pick 🙂 I’ve had The Eye of the Heron  on my TBR list for a while, and this seemed like a perfect time to pick it up. I love Le Guin not only because of her writing itself, but for the fact that she is one of the truly great female fantasy/sci-fi writers. Even when […]

Family Ties

The Little Sister by Raymond Chandler

Philip Marlow is a hard boiled private detective in Los Angeles who could use a case. He could use a lot of things, but he’d settle for a case. Until one morning when a plain, proper girl from Manhattan Kansas walks into his office asking him to find her brother. This is a great, pulpy mystery set in Hollywood in the 40s. Chandler is well into his groove with this one and Philip Marlow gets dragged through hell before he can untie all the knots […]

Birthday bingo

The Night Women by Sara Blaedel

One day I will learn that remaindered books are not always the bargain I think they are because you’re only saving money on something cheap if you actually want it. I’m not the brightest in that regard. At least this is a good selection for my birthday bingo card; the author was born 8/6 and the book prominently features an abandoned newborn. I’m not one for mysteries typically, but I had just finished Tana French’s The Trespasser and realized I was nearing the end of […]

Third Book A Bit Meh, Honestly (CBR11 Bingo)

The Wedding Party by Jasmine Guillory

Sometimes I just don’t want to write a review, but I feel the need to do it anyway, just to purge the book from my system and make room for the next. It usually happens with the mediocre books, the ones where you think “well, that was fine I suppose”. That is exactly how I feel about Jasmine Guillory’s third book The Wedding Party. It was decidedly fine. When I read The Wedding Date last year I noted that her debut showed the possibilities of […]

Love of Reading Gone Wrong

Finders Keepers by Stephen King

Bingo Square: Birthday (Stephen King’s birthday is 21 September) Even though I quite liked Mr. Mercedes, I can’t say I was that interested in more novels with the characters.  Based on who had and hadn’t survived in Mr. Mercedes, I felt like it ended well as it was, and I didn’t necessarily want to continue reading more about some of the characters without others also being around. However, I still ended up downloading the two other novels in the trilogy when I was granted a […]

One of my top recommendations right now!

Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly

This is a Cinderella retelling focusing on one of the ugly stepsisters.  There is magic in this story, but also a lot of realism. We start with Isabelle, the younger of the stepsisters, getting ready to reluctantly cut off her toes to fit into the glass slipper.  Her older sister, Octavia, has already cut off her heel and was caught out, so now it’s Isabelle’s turn to try to secure their future. As expected, it doesn’t turn out well. The tale of Cinderella has a […]
