Ask the Passengers by A.S. King

August 13, 2018 by Dusty Highway Leave a Comment

CBR10Bingo: Cannonballer Says I’ve tried to branch out more into other genres and new authors with my reading this year, and some of the bigger gaps in my library include YA and lesbian lit. Just my luck, then, that MrsLangdonAlger posted a review for not one but two YA coming out novels with female protagonists: Ask the Passengers by A.S. King and It’s Not Like It’s a Secret by Misa Sugiura. I’ve had an eye out for both books for a few months now, finally […]

I’m not sure why AS King isn’t a worldwide phenomenon, worshipped by all who are lucky enough to read her books.

I Crawl Through It by AS King

This is the fifth AS King book I’ve had the pleasure of reading during my tenure as a Cannonballer…I read Please Ignore Vera Dietz way back in CBR3, Ask the Passengers in CBR6, and earlier this year I read the mind-bending Still Life with Tornado and the amazing Glory O’Brien’s History of the Future. And after reading this one, I found myself wondering why teens (and parents! parents should be reading these!) all over the world aren’t universally singing the praises of AS King.* I know. These books aren’t exactly […]

This is why I still visit the YA section of my library.

Still Life with Tornado, Glory O'Brien's History of the Future by A.S. King

May 8, 2017 by scootsa1000 1 Comment

There are very few writers — of any genre — that absolutely grasp how to write dialogue that an actual  human being would say. And I think its especially difficult when it comes to YA characters. Rainbow Rowell can do it. Andrew Smith can do it. And my god, AS King can do it, too. Years and years ago (for CBR3!!!), I read Please Ignore Vera Dietz, a book I still think about every once in a while. It was so different from anything else I had read […]

Starships Were Meant to Fly, Hands Up to Touch the Sky

Ask the Passengers by A.S. King

May 29, 2015 by Melina Leave a Comment

Ask the Passengers by A.S. King is a touching little book about something I really hadn’t thought about more than just in passing (and really that’s a huge shame on me)– and that is–what is it like to be a teenager and not be exactly sure of one’s sexuality?  I grew up knowing that boys did something for me–it was very clear to me at the age of three when I started slobbering on my TV whenever John Schneider slid across the hood of the […]

Take that, Lauren Oliver!

Ask the Passengers by AS King

April 7, 2014 by scootsa1000 Leave a Comment

Ages and ages ago, way back when I was doing my first Cannonball, I read an amazing book called Please Ignore Vera Dietz by AS King. It was the kind of book that really stuck with me — I thought about it long after finishing it, adding it to a list of books in my mind that I would set aside for Bunnybean to read when she is old enough. But I never sought out any of King’s other books. Why? Because of Lauren Oliver. I’m going […]
