Red Bones

Red Bones by Ann Cleeves

I inherited this one from a book club friend and read it on a little weekend beach outing. I don’t usually seek out thrillers/mysteries – I find that their quality/pacing/gore levels/etc. vary so wildly that I have a hard time finding one that sticks. In other words: I’ve given up on a lot of thrillers, but I finished this one! It’s apparently #3 in Ann Cleeves’ Shetland series, and apparently also has been made into a BBC show. The more you know! Anyway, here’s the […]

The Dying Light (Two Rivers #4) by Ann Cleeves

The Dying Light by Ann Cleeves

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not impact my rating or review. The Dying Light continues to follow the Two Rivers series written by Ann Cleeves. In her newest, Cleeves has Detective Matthew Venn called in to investigate the death of a teenage girl, Lottie, in a swimming pool in the home of an up and coming politician, Paul Armstrong. The teenage girl is called Lottie, and what is making things even more frantic is that Lottie’s best friend, Hannah […]

“Sea Fever” follows George and Molly Palmer-Jones who are asked to go on a sea excursion to find a man (Greg Franks) who won’t contact his family. Both are reluctant to take the case, but because George is bird mad he agrees and gets caught up on looking at birds. Greg goes missing and then is found roped onto the boat and apparently murdered. George and Molly investigate who would have the motive to kill the young man and why. Well this one definitely had […]

Another Man’s Poison (George & Molly Palmer-Jones #5) by Ann Cleeves

Another Man's Poison by Ann Cleeves

I think every book I read this weekend was a three star read. Nothing Earth shaking at all. I think I am disappointed with this one because the prior George & Molly Palmer-Jones books were really good. This book’s reasoning behind the murder just didn’t make sense because Cleeves in my opinion did something I don’t like with mystery writers, just tossed out information on something you would not get to until they tell you. It just came out of nowhere for me. Also, for […]

The Killing Stones by Ann Cleeves

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. I want to make sure readers know, though this is the continuation of Ann Cleeves Jimmy Perez character, it’s not a “Shetland” mystery, the action takes place on Orkney, several miles off the coast of Scotland. I honestly really enjoyed this book–hence the 5 stars–because I think that Cleeves did a great slow burn of bringing us back into Jimmy’s life and how it’s changed, head nods to […]

A Lesson in Dying by Ann Cleeves

A Lesson in Dying by Ann Cleeves

Updated review from February 1, 2025 Trigger warning: Suicide I received this book from NetGalley, which did not affect my rating or review. Just to make sure people know, I read this back in 2021. I went and re-read a ton of Cleeves back-list. I do feel disappointed I could not continue with her Palmer-Jones series. I really enjoyed it, but most of the books are not available unless they are in paperback somewhere. The Inspector Ramsay series is in my opinion very good. In […]
